TAKING CONTROL
And we still have the promise that God gave those people. That promise is that we can enter His place of rest. (Hebrews 4:1 ERV)
There are times when I go to bed and wake up in the same position I started out in. There are other times that I wake up and change positions often. There are other times when I wake up and consider giving up and getting up but keep trying to rest and finally fall asleep and wake up glad that I kept pressing for rest. There are the other times that I give up and get up and the day is a long day.
Rest is what God calls us to. We need rest. When we do not rest it has a tendency to affect everyone and everything in our lives. God has promised us rest, but we have the control of whether or not we enter it. Some time back we touched on the fact that God is in charge but not in control. He does not control all things. He could but He won’t. If He did, Israel would have entered the Promised Land the first time, everyone would be saved, and there would be no evil in the world. By the way, He is in charge of when that will all take place. For now, he gives us the choice to take control or not.
James says we have access to wisdom. Throughout the Bible we are told to call on God. Jesus declared that He was the way, truth, and life. We can take His yoke and He will give us rest.
Our part is to ask for the wisdom, call on God, and choose life. Does that sound like God is in control? It does sound like He is on call!
How is it that He makes promises and tells us to prove Him faithful, and we manage to turn that into His responsibility to just take over? He has always wanted us to take over the great things He created for us. Adam and Eve were really supposed to spread the garden over the whole earth. Jesus came and made a way for us to start over.
We determine what grows in our garden. We decide whether we will take control or be controlled. If we are controlled, it is not God controlling us. You see, the things that control us are not things from God. God has prepared a table for us to go to when the enemy comes to control us. If we do not go to the table, it is not God’s doing nor is it the enemy’s doing. We choose who we will serve.
We cannot control everything or everyone, but we can control ourselves. We can control how we react and how we act. We can take our thoughts captive. We really can. Jesus promised us we could through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit. Consider your own thinking concerning who is in control. Are you ready to take control of things that you have let control you. Step up to the Lord’s Table and see how He will help.
