TAKING POSSESSION

Then Joshua asked them, "How long are you going to wait before taking possession of the remaining land the Lord, the God of your ancestors has given to you?" (Joshua 18:3 NLT)

I think it is safe to say that few of us possess all that God has given us. The question is, why? What are we waiting for? Why do we stand outside the promises of God and wish they were ours, instead of going ahead and possessing them?

I heard a man recently say that healing is not a promise, it is a fact. God said, “By His stripes we were healed.” He did not promise to heal us; He did it. I will tell you that I am sometimes slow to possess that healing. I say the right things, but the truth is I am standing outside the fact hoping it happens rather that possessing the land the Lord has given me. No, I do not know why some people receive their healings and others do not!

Remember when Jesus asked the man by the pool if he wanted to be well and the man said he couldn’t. It occurred to me recently how good it was of Jesus to give Him another opportunity. Personally I think it would have been easier if the man had just said yes, because the second time He had to get up and pick up His mat and walk.

That is sort like when God told Israel to go in and possess the land but they preferred to listen to the report of the ten spies without faith rather that Joshua and Caleb who believed God. They missed their first opportunity. Unfortunately for them, God waited till they all died to give their children the next opportunity.

Now, here they were again hesitating to go and possess what God had already given them. They did this even after seeing God defeat their enemies for them. One tribe even told Joshua they could not defeat the people because they had iron chariots. The truth was they cold not defeat them if all they had was pillows to fight with unless the Lord was on their side.

It is amazing sometimes how we can see God do wonderful things and experience His presence and His miracles and then turn right around and forget that the Lord is on our side. Why will we expend so much energy to walk in fear and so little energy to walk in faith? We will work many hours everyday because we fear losing our possessions. Of course we need to pay our bills, but the truth is we do it because we don’t want to lose what we have. Then in the same week, we will feel that we just don’t have the time or the energy to put in the effort to grow in our faith. We know that He knows about everything and that He can help in every situation, but for some reason we don’t trust Him to do it.

Joshua encourage the people by telling them that He was sure they could defeat the people even if they had iron chariots. I believe that we can all possess the truth that God has given us. When draw near to God we know that He draws near to us. What are we waiting for?
