TAKING RESPONSIBILITY
"Now it shall come to pass, if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God...(Deuteronomy 28:1a)
I know that God has our times in His hands and that He has the final decision in all things, but it seems to me as I read His word that He has His promises are set to release when we do our part. You know, we repent; He forgives and etc.
When I awake in the night and talk with the Lord about things, including going back to sleep, there still comes a time when it is my responsibility to get out of bed. There have been times when the Lord has instructed me to get up and read or write something down, but even then, it is my responsibility to get up.
We can sit down at the table for a great meal, but it is still our responsibility to eat it. A person can offer us a ride, and we have the responsibility of getting in. I realize that these are very elementary illustrations, but the bottom line is that we all realize in life that we have certain responsibilities. People who are irresponsible are usually a disaster waiting to happen! Not surprisingly, these people usually want to blame someone else for their troubles.
The scripture today is the beginning of a wonderful chapter in the bible that we all love to read and believe for the promises of God’s blessings. It is also a chapter that spends even more time talking about the evil that lurks about ready to destroy us. Even though we do not often read it from this perspective, this chapter very clearly points out our part in opening the door to both the blessings and the problems.
Of course, we all know that the enemy lurks about for opportunities to destroy us no matter what, but by taking responsibility according to God’s directions; we can dwell in that secret place of the most high. We are promised here that if we will diligently obey the voice of the Lord He will set us high above all the nations of the earth. I believe this is a personal promise as well as a national promise. I believe we can all agree that our nation needs to be healed. The whole world needs to be healed. And God said that if His people would humble themselves and pray…He would heal our land.
The responsibility begins with each one who will hear His voice and believe what He says. We all want the blessings. We would be crazy not to! The key is whether or not we believe Him enough to take the responsibility of getting to the place to receive what He promises. If someone calls and promises a reward just for meeting them somewhere, we have the opportunity and the responsibility of showing up. If it is for real and we don’t show up, we are responsible for missing it.
God is for real. Let’s take responsibility for ourselves, for the nation, and the world. All that is required is to diligently follow God’s word. His yoke is easy and His burden is light. He came so we could have abundant life and to make us whole. It would be irresponsible to neglect such great promises.
