TEACHING, PREACHING & HEALING
Now Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the Kingdom, and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease..(Matthew 4:23 NKJ)
Many Christians wonder what God wants them to do. Others think that they really do not need to do anything. Some want to do something, but don’t think they can. The list of what Christians think and do not think and do and do not do is a long one. Then there is the list of what non Christians think that Christians should do. And, well that is not anything that we need to go into here. What we want to look into, is what Jesus did. Why? Because He said that we should do likewise.
First, Jesus was teaching in the Synagogue. So, obviously there was need for the truth there. There needs to be teaching in our churches, and in our homes, and on our streets, and where ever there is someone with ears to hear. As they say, everyone has a pulpit of some sort. As a pastor, I have the responsibility of teaching the truth. Not the truth as I see it, but as the Lord reveals it.(No, I do not know all the truth!) So I must seek Him diligently. The people then have a responsibility to practice and share what they learn.
Along with His teaching, He was also preaching the good news of the Kingdom of God. There is a lot of good news, and a good share of it is not being shared. Much of it is being mocked and criticized even in the church. People seem to have a problem with teaching of God’s provision, protection, and constant direction. They seem not to want a personal full time God who is involved in their lives. That is why the Pharisees did not like the way that Jesus came and taught and interacted with the people.
As a result of His teaching and preaching, God confirmed the word with all kinds of healings of all kinds of sickness. In fact, Jesus’ fame spread so far and so fast, that everywhere he went they brought the sick to be healed. Of course He taught them and preached to them the good news of the Kingdom, even though they mostly came to get healed. Today, there are anointed ministries who’s work is being accompanied by signs and wonders, and still lots of people spend their time talking badly about them. Somehow, in the church, the Good News has been so diluted that healing is not expected, and certainly not over practiced. But, God is moving by His Spirit to change this!
There is a better side to this that is to be considered as well. When we do hear the Word, and believe the Word. And when we do practice the Word and allow it to dwell in us richly. We find more and more that health begins to replace healing, or that healing becomes an expected result when we pray, even for ourselves. The church then a becomes a place of people with testimonies of healings taking place as God is worshipped. Even when this is not the case, there is the assurance that Jesus still responds to the prayer of faith for healing. We should all be about the Lord’s business of teaching, preaching and healing. “Go into all the world” is message to every believer.
