THAT VOICE
We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with Him. (2 Peter 1:18 NLT)
You can hear God. Everyone can hear God. Oftentimes people hear God and do not know it is God. Sometimes people hear God and know it is God and ignore what God is saying. Other times, people are like I was and do not realize that we can hear. In my case, it just never occurred to me that God was trying to get my attention.
I once had an experience while singing a solo in High school where a large chandelier started swinging and a dear friend said that God was talking to me in that experience. I ignored that input at the time, but after I began to hear that voice, I realized that she was absolutely right.
I am certain that most who take the time to read this can already relate to what we are talking about here, but it is important to be reminded that we can hear the Lord and that we should seek to hear Him continually. If there is one thing I really need and want, it is to be sensitive to His voice. I do not want to miss what He has to say and certainly do not want to ignore what He is saying.
Obviously, the best way to hear God is to listen for His voice. Scripture says that we need to be hearing the word of God. We also know that scripture is alive and powerful, but until we desire it, let’s face it, it is often dry and useless in our eyes. When we are not hungry for it, we have no desire to hear it. The same is true of the voice of God. If we are not hungry to hear Him, we could care less if He ever speaks. If you want God to speak into your life, you must listen for His voice.
Don’t wait until you are desperate to seek Him; we really do not hear so well when we are desperate, because there too many other things on our minds. However, if we develop that ear to hear on a regular basis, we will more often than not find that He comes speaking before we are so desperate.
I was just reading about the time the disciples were struggling in the boat and Jesus walked out to them before desperation set in. At first His appearance startled them, but He immediately let them know not to be afraid. When Peter asked to walk on the water, Jesus told him to come. When Peter feared and sank, Jesus asked why his faith was so small.
I think we often have small faith because we do not listen for that voice; consequently, when we hear that voice we doubt it. It is like hearing someone and trying to put a name to the voice on the other end of the phone. Some voices you know without hesitation; others not so much. His voice is one that we need to recognize and not doubt. There is life in that voice. Everything we could ever need or desire is in that voice. Listen. Can you hear Him?
