THE CARE OF THE LORD
Paul and Barnabas also appointed elders in every church and prayed for them with fasting, turning them over to the care of the Lord, in whom they had come to trust. (Acts 14:23 NLT)
So, what do you think about the care of the Lord? Do you think that things are in good hands when you turn them over to the Lord’s care? Most people hope that God cares. Well, some believe that He cares about some things, and others believe that He cares about all things. Some think that He takes care of everything and others think He only takes care of the things we turn over to Him. And still others think that He is in charge of everything good and evil! There are a whole lot more thoughts that come to mind when people consider the care of the Lord, but these alone would take a book to consider.
One thing is obvious, and that is that God is not in charge of everything, because if He was, there would not be any evil things going on in the world. There is no unrighteousness or wickedness in God. I just heard a man say, “If God were in charge of everything, we would not need to ask Him to intervene in things!” Face it, God is perfect and everything would be the way it will be someday if God were in charge of everything today.
Still, it is always good to put things in God’s hands. If we leave things there, we can trust Him to do his part. When Paul and Barnabas appointed the elders they trusted the Lord to lead these people and keep them in His way. At the same time, the elders were expected to keep themselves in the Love of God. Concerning the care of the Lord, be sure that you understand that the Lord does care and than He can do abundantly above and beyond what we could hope or imagine. It does require some application of our faith to grow in our confidence in the depth of God’s care for us. The more we see it in action, the more confidence we will have in it.
It says here that Paul and Barnabas had come to trust in the Lord and in His care. There is nothing automatic about trusting God. We all have to come to this place on our own! It does not matter how much someone else trusts the Lord. It does not matter how much confidence someone else has in the care of the Lord. No one can give us their trust or their confidence. They can encourage us to continue in the faith. They can assure us that it will all work out. But it is when we know for ourselves how deeply God cares for us that the true assurance comes.
Paul and Barnabas learned from experience that God was faithful. They had given God ample opportunity to prove Himself. They trusted God enough to assure these leaders that they would be fine because they had prayed for them, and as long as they trusted in God’s care, God would not fail them. How deeply have you entered into the care of the Lord? How much have you come to trust Him?
