THE COMFORT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied. (Acts 9:31 NKJ)

Comfort; isn’t that what love is? What better day to speak of love and comfort than Valentine’s Day? Actually, every day is ‘love day’ with God, because God is love! The awareness of God’s love brings peace and edification. It builds us up. This scripture tells us how the Holy Spirit makes us aware of the awesome power of God and at the same time comforts us, enabling us to walk in the way in ‘the way’, just as Jesus commanded.

The Holy Spirit is truly a multipurpose friend. He draws people to God through Christ. He reveals the truth and leads us into all the truth that we will walk in. He never runs out of more! This may sound like a rather flippant statement, but the Holy Spirit was not, is not, and never will be a carrier pigeon! He descended upon Jesus like a dove would land on a branch. It seems that he came down upon Jesus, the same way that Jesus later ascended into heaven. He came down and remained on Jesus. He is not a bird, He is a person. He also came to dwell in us. Jesus called Him the comforter! Jesus experienced a good deal of His comfort as he walked this earth and died on the cross. I think it is important to keep this in mind. It seems that more often than not we see the Holy Spirit as a vapor rather than a person. He actually is a tangible presence of God, Who is God, Who was sent at the request of Jesus Christ the Son of God, Who is God! His job is to reveal Who God is!

So, let’s get back to comfort and the love of God. When you think of comfort, what kind of thoughts come to mind? Just few that came to me are, warm, cozy, safe, cared for, preferred, blessed, loved, protected, defended, provided for, peaceful state of mind, enlightened, and this is only a short list. The Holy Spirit was sent by God to accomplish all of this and more for the followers of Jesus Christ.

The early church flourished under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. They knew how to draw on all that He provided. People like Stephen experienced a type of comfort that I really do not want to experience first hand, but knowing the Holy Spirit was able to comfort him even in that terrible time is good to know. They experienced His comfort in every way that we can imagine, and He has not changed.

What does the Holy Spirit have for you? What can He do for you? What are you expecting Him to do? Don’t leave Him out of your life or relegate Him to a dust in the wind position. He is real and He came to complete the good work that was begun in us when He drew us to the Father. God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are one; and they are for you. Walk in the fear of God and the Comfort of the Holy Spirit.
