THE GIFT
Jesus replied, "If you only knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water." (John 4:10 NLT)
If you only knew; now there is a statement that peaks peoples interest. This woman started out wondering why Jesus would even talk to her. He was different from other Jews. As soon as she opened a door, He came with a bold statement. He let her know that He knew something she needed to know.
Once again, Jesus was speaking like someone with authority. He was speaking like someone who actually knew God and that He knew God had a gift for her. No one had ever given her any reason to think that she could have anything from God. She knew that the Jews were blessed of God. She knew that they claimed Jerusalem as the only place to worship. In her life she must have done some seeking. Now God had arranged for her to meet the very one that everyone was seeking. When Jesus told her about a gift and about living water, she questioned that statement. Don’t be surprised when people question what you have to say concerning God. Be willing to take the time to reveal that you know who and what you are talking about.
As Jesus continued to speak to her heart, she became thirsty for that living water He was talking about. She began to realize this is what she had been looking for. At the moment that she was ready, Jesus let her know that He knew about her past and He made it clear that it did not matter. He was about to make all things new. No doubt in her seeking she had often come to the conclusion that her past might just disqualify her from a relationship with God. However, Jesus did not say, “Oh that is right, you have had five husbands and you are living in sin now, you may as well forget it.”
This made her a bit nervous and she changed the subject. We all have a tendency to change the subject when the Word starts working on us. We quit listening. We put the bible down. We start talking about something else! So she asked about worship.
Jesus response was that the day was coming when all that mattered was that people worshipped in the Spirit with their whole heart. This woman was ready for a heart change. She then revealed that she knew about the teaching of Messiah coming. Jesus response was to give her whatever it took to complete her heart change. He told her clearly that He was in fact the Messiah. With that, she was off and running.
Jesus is more that willing to meet our needs. If we will consider that God has wonderful gifts for us, if we will cease to doubt and question, and if we will only believe, we will see the glory of God in every aspect of our lives. What gift have you been seeking? Have you received the greatest gift of all? Are you drinking often and long from the living water? Don’t look any further than Jesus. He gives and gives and gives.
