THE GREATEST...LASTS
There are three things that will endure--faith, hope, and love--and the greatest of these is love. (1Corinthians 13:13 NLT)
I made an interesting discovery recently. I timed myself as I read this chapter of the Word of God. It took me one minute and thirty-six seconds to read it without rushing at all. It occurred to me that in a lifetime I would at best only partially incorporate all the truth that is revealed in that short period of time. It also became obvious that it would not take much time or effort to refresh my memory of it each day!
So we know that love will last forever, because God is love. God is forever and His love is forever. Have you ever heard someone who is in love described as having their head in the clouds? There is some truth to that. When a person is in love nothing else seems to matter quite so much. Well, this is the kind of love God has for us, and when we let that kind of love go toward Him, our head gets in the cloud. Just like when Moses went up into the cloud. Truly that kind of love puts troubles in their place; cast upon God.
Faith and hope are strong and durable, but they will not produce love. Faith can hold on to what must be true. Hope can give us assurance that truth will win. But they just cannot produce love.
Love on the other hand, can revive faith. When the love is strong faith is active. When love is strong hope is sure. That is why the greatest one is love. Many people lose their faith and hope because they do not have confidence in God’s great love for them.
People think that if they have enough faith they can make it through anything, but the Word says that if we have faith to move a mountain but don’t have love we are no good to anybody. Everyone wants to be good for something. Sometimes people say just keep hoping. That is good advice. We must keep our hope. But without love hope gets slippery, and faith grows weary.
The love of God and the love for God is the only thing that can keep everything intact. His love never changes. Knowing this strengthens our faith and our hope. His love is so much bigger than we can imagine, but He challenges us to try.
Believing that God is who He says He is and that He can do all that He says can do is the beginning of faith. Believing that He loves us the way that He does gives us the confidence to believe that He has good plans for us and that they will come to pass no matter what it may look like from time to time.
Our faith may weaken, and our hope may seem vanish, but love will hold it all together and bring everything back stronger than ever. That is why love (God) is the greatest. May the next year be a year filled with that kind of love for all of us.
