THE HEDGE
Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love...rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer... (Romans 12:10 & 12 NKJ)
We all have a great desire to see the acceleration of the kingdom God and we are all willing to do whatever it takes in order to see it manifest in our lives and having said that, we also realize that the obvious power behind seeing all of this manifest is found in prayer. Prayer protects, attacks, provides, upholds and much more. With this in mind, I want to share what the Lord taught from the hedge.
As I was attempting to remove a hedge from a yard, the Lord began to reveal some very interesting things. When I first started I came very close to changing my mind about the project because it was going to be miserable. Every time I cut a branch I got poked and even after cutting it, it would not fall down and I could barely tear it out of the clutches of the other branches. Because of this I very nearly decided to just put up with it and trim it in the spring. Instead I took a different approach and went to the end of the hedge, but even then, it was not really fun.
It was then that I began to look at what was going on and I thought how prayer works in the body of Christ. As a body, we are to be entwined. If we are entwined we hold one another up, so that even if someone is attacked, the prayers of others hold them up so that they don’t just fall out. There were times when I had to cut several of the stalks just to get one to even consider coming out and like I said even then, I got poked and considered doing it another day or not at all. There were even totally dead and detached branches that were part of the hedge and you could not tell they were dead till everything was removed. Also, take note that the head or end of the hedge was the obvious point of attack, so when you go to minister, don’t be surprised when attacks come.
This caused me to realize that by our prayers we are able to hold up even those who have no life of Christ left in them. There are people all over the world who are still being prayed for in hopes that life will come back to them. They may think they are far away, but they are still being prayed for and at any moment life could return.
I also noticed that new chutes that had grown up which were easier to cut at the bottom were not easily removed, because once again they were wrapped up in the bush and the bush held on. This reminded me that new and young Christians are held up by the prayers of the more established Christians, so we must be sure to pray.
Some of the stumps were so big that I had to get a different tool. With this I saw the two sides of the sword. Some of the resistance of the enemy is like a hedge as well and he works hard to hold his. Sometimes it seems that he works harder and more effectively than we do. This should not be. What ever it takes we must do. Remember we win. Pray for one another, keep your hedge strong and the enemy’s torn down!
