THE HOLY ONE
I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One. (Proverbs 30:3 NLT)
This scripture may well reveal the biggest hindrance as well as one of the greatest secrets to spiritual growth. It is so hard for people really acknowledge that they don’t know much. Still others believe that what they don’t know won’t hurt them. Then there are those who are convinced that they know all they need to know and they are not about to open themselves up to more. And finally, some are convinced they already know all that there is to know about everything and everybody. Strangely enough this is the very thing that keeps people from every really knowing God as they could and it keeps them in opposition to anyone who suggests they should.
On the other hand, those who do draw close to God find themselves more and more convinced that they do not know much at all nor do they know the Holy One as they should. It is when we finally come to end of ourselves that we open up to true knowledge. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of that knowledge.
Even as God increases understanding we are amazed at how much we truly do not understand. This however is the very thing that opens our minds to the revelation of God and enables us to move deeper and deeper into His love. On the other hand, when we resist the truth, we draw further and further away from Him.
The natural mind considers this kind of thinking foolishness, but the spiritual mind agrees completely. The person who is controlled by the natural cannot let go of what they think is important in order to launch into the truth of God’s word. Even after we have gained a certain amount of understanding, there come times when the natural has such a hold on us that we miss the very best things that God has for us.
If we are fortunate, in the midst of these struggles, we will come to God and declare that we truly do not even know which way is up. When we cry in desperation God hears us and grants us wisdom and favor. With that wisdom we come to know yet another part of the Holy One and prayerfully we resolve to draw nearer and nearer to God. For if we draw near to God He will draw near to us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
There is no shame in admitting that we do not know everything. Nor does it mean we do not know God at all if we admit that really don’t know Him, as we should. There are so many realms of His greatness and so many areas of our lives where we have not yet experienced Him. May we never be satisfied until we know Him as he wants us to.
God help us to overcome our pride and submit ourselves completely to your wisdom and your presence so that we might have greater understanding and know you more.
