THE HOLY SPIRIT SPEAKS
The wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17 NKJ)
Since it is the Holy Spirit who draws us to God in the first place, I believe it is safe to say that we have all heard from God on many occasions in our lives. We just did not realize it was God. Now that we are drawing near to God, it is important that we tune in even more closely to hear what He is saying to us. I know that many people, Christians included, question the validity of hearing God’s voice. If you are one of those, get over it and determine to give Him an opportunity to prove that He is speaking way more often that you ever imagined.
We need to hear God’s voice. People all over the world need to hear from God. If everyone would listen to God there would not be wars. There would not be abortion, prisons would be empty, families would be happy, there would be no need for metal detectors in schools, and no fear of terrorism. As we know, this is not the case in the world we live in, but we have to believe that God could and would fix everything if only people would listen. So as Christians, we have the responsibility of listening to what God says and then doing what the Spirit leads us to do. Yes, the first step is hearing, but then Jesus warned that we should not be just hearers of the Word, but doers also.
So how do we know God’s voice? That is a great question, because it implies that we want to hear it. God assures us that if we draw near to Him, He will draw near to us. So the desire to hear opens up the line of communication. The more we desire to know God, the more we will know Him, and this removes the static from the line.
The scripture tells us that when God speaks it is first pure. There is nothing wishy-washy about the Word of God. He does not change and so we can be sure that what He says is pure. His Word is peaceable. Sounds funny that peaceable words can stir up so much trouble, but they do. Still, when it is His word it creates peace in our spirit so that even if there is trouble all around we are peaceful because we have heard God.
God’s word is also gentle and helps us to be willing to yield to his correction. When we hear it from God, all stubbornness melts and we again have peace. We must not fight against the Word of God, not if we want peace that is.
His words produce good fruits. Following His direction removes all partiality. We are partial only to what He says and wants and nothing else. There is no hypocrisy when we are standing on what God says. The truth is the truth and that is just the way it is. The Holy Spirit speaks and then bears witness that the Lord has spoken. Expect Him to speak to you and be prepared to see the great things that God will do when you follow His voice.
