THE LIVING WORD

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16 NKJ)

Have you ever considered whether the word of God is your source of life or simply a supplement? In our society it seems we cannot decide whether we are more health conscious or suicidal! We are busy trying to find a way to live forever, while we advertise lifestyles that kill us daily. One of the health crazes is food supplements. If you don’t get enough of something in your diet, just take this. If you don’t like milk, take calcium. If you don’t like meat, take protein. And the list goes on and on.

God never intended for His word to be a supplement. He said that His words contained life, health, and wealth and everything else we would ever need. His word actually does give us the key to living forever. Still, for many people the word of God is not even on their list of things to consider. Sadly, it is at best a supplement to many who declare themselves to be followers of Christ. The truth is that most of us could improve on how much we are actually allowing the word of God dwell in us richly and rule our lives.

As I considered this, I wondered how often I have allowed myself to end up in the emergency room nearly on life support before I allowed the word that was in me to have its way. How often do I continue thinking and speaking the wrong direction when I know better but just refuse to rein it in. And all the while, the word in me is pointing out the truth.

Fortunately God is faithful and His Word never fails, and when I finally allow His Word to do what it is intended to do, it accomplishes what God has promised. It truly is a living and powerful word. The more we make it the first choice in our lives, the more we will see it accomplish the promises of God in our lives.

No diet or exercise program will work unless it is put into practice. The same is true with the promises of God. We cannot expect the word to do its perfect work if it is not put into practice. That is why God told us to prove His Word. He welcomes us to put it to the test, not as a supplement but as our main source. He does not want us to try it just at desperate times. Although He often answers those desperate cries, we seldom continue on with Him once the rescue has been made. That is because when He is used as a supplement, like supplements He is easily left on the shelf until we happen to think of Him again.

When He is our life and His Word is our source, we don’t go anywhere or do anything without Him. Then just like when someone comes up with something new that works, whether it be a diet, exercise program, or wealth scheme, our lives become billboards advertising the goodness of God and power of His word. The great news is that His plan works for everyone. How rich is the Lord’s Word in you?
