THE MESSENGER

The Lord All-Powerful says, "I am sending my messenger to prepare the way for me. Then suddenly the Lord you are looking for will come to His temple. Yes, the messenger you are waiting for, the one who will tell about my agreement, is really coming!" (Malachi 3:1 ERV)

And so, Christ came into the world to do just what God promised. Of course much time passed before this scripture was fulfilled and many missed Him when He came. Now again, much time has passed. Each year we remember and prepare for the celebration of His first coming; at least we should consider Jesus! We should also consider that He is coming again and that being ready for that coming is a big deal!

We cannot consider Christ’s birth without considering His death and resurrection. It is amazing how we can compartmentalize things. We can consider His birth and ignore the new birth. We can consider His death for our sins and ignore the sins He died to forgive. We can consider His resurrection and ignore His return. We can say we are not really ignoring anything; we just are not considering it much!

Facts are facts, whether we acknowledge them or not, the question I have been considering is, “What are we doing now?” I think many people, myself included at times get caught up in the doing which at times discourages the believing.

If we never think we are doing enough, or if we think we do not need to do anything, we will lose sight of what is important. What is important is doing what we do as unto the Lord! That means living our lives faithful to His calling on us. There are many simple statements throughout the Bible that give big clues and yet they are often overshadowed by the thought that if we are not doing something big we are not doing enough. For instance, we are instructed to live prepared to explain the hope that is in us; living confident in our blessed hope splashes into all parts of our lives and overflows into the lives of others. That may not seem big, but it is in fact huge and not that hard to do.

Think of Christ’s birth. Simeon had spent years praying for His coming. He prayed so much that God assured him he would live to see it. How many years did he share this with people? How many people thought he was crazy all those years? How many believed him after Christ was born? Simeon just did what he did. It certainly did not look important and if it were not in the Bible, we never would have known; but God knew.

The same is true of multitudes down through the centuries and the same is true for each of us. If you believe in the birth, death, resurrection, and the return of Jesus, you are special. If you live in a way that brings Him honor and glory, you are extra special. These things alone make you a messenger and cause God to smile on you.

Simply let your light, which is His light, shine so that others see it and give Him glory and when He comes you will know you have done what He called you to do. His is the only measure that matters. In Christ you are a messenger!
