THE MOMENT OF TRUTH
"Now the time has come for the Son of Man to enter into His glory." (John 12:23 NLT)
Long ago, my dad was the baseball coach and I was a bat boy. Baseball was big in our family and since we grew up with it and loved it, even as a youngster I could play the game. Well there came a time when my dad had to choose who would get uniforms and who would not make the team and there was one guy that just could not play and I knew it. I felt so bad for him that one night my dad asked me what was wrong and I started crying asking my dad if that guy could at least be a bat boy with me. I knew that could not happen but all the same I wanted the guy to catch a break! The moment of truth came and he just did not qualify.
Every person in the world faces a moment of truth. Qualifications for making the team on that day lie with believing in and trusting the Lord Jesus Christ. No matter how much God loves every person, the standard must be met or no uniform will be issued. Jesus wept over His people because He wanted them to make the team. He cried out for all who thirst to come to Him and drink. Everyone is thirsty. Jesus told the woman at the well about the only water that would truly quench a person’s thirst. Not one person who faces that truth will argue with God about whether He is just and right or not. Everyone will know it. I think every person who stands before Him; even those who are ultimately disqualified will feel His great love before being forced to live forever away from His presence. How sad!
I know some folks like to focus on the destruction that the Bible speaks about, but God says that He is love. So even when destruction comes I cannot see Him enjoying it and I really don’t think we should either. The Good News of the Gospel is what Jesus told us to go into the world and proclaim.
When Jesus came into the city, it was a moment of truth. It was a fulfillment of the prophecy concerning our Savior. It was the beginning of the proof that God loves us so much that He gave His only Son. It was the ultimate proof of Jesus’ dedication to the truth and to His Father. It was a moment of truth that made the way for the Truth to dwell in every person who would believe it.
Some truth is sweet and just stays sweet. Some truth is sweet because it is truth but it is not fun. A couple of prophets mention that they ate the word and it tasted great but tore them up inside. I hate to think of people meeting the Lord in their moment of truth only to find out they believed the lie that they did not need Jesus. That is why my heart cries for people to know His goodness so they do not need to experience any other part. I desire to be chastened by the Word piercing my heart and not by sudden destruction. I desire to stand in troubles not just survive them.
I do not believe that a single person that enters eternity with Jesus experiences one moment of regret about being there. In fact I have never heard of anyone who died, spent time with Jesus, and then returned; testify that they wanted to leave Him to come back here. Unless of course they discovered that they were lost. Then they wanted to come back just like the rich man! Jesus did what His father wanted Him to do. He came into the city that day to enter His glory and to lead many more to glory. That is the truth. And we can know the truth and the truth will make us free. This is the Good News. This is God news! Blessed be the Name of the Lord!
