THE NAME OF JESUS
The name of Jesus has healed this man--and you know how lame he was before. Faith in Jesus' name has caused this healing before your very eyes. (Acts 3:16 NLT)
The name of Jesus is always the same. What Jesus can do and His love for us never changes. It is our faith in His name that determines His response. He left us with the promise that whatever we asked in His name He would do for us. He repeated Himself saying to ask anything in His name and “I will do it for you.” Now we see Peter and he tells this crowd of people that the name of Jesus has healed this man. He then expounds upon that by saying that it was faith in Jesus’ name that caused the healing. So it is apparent that just using the name of Jesus or saying the name of Jesus without the faith in the name is simply a religious exercise. We must apply the faith in more than words.
The faith must be in who He is and His promises. In other words it is not how much we know or how spiritual we are that accomplishes anything it is confidence in Him and in what He taught us and continues to teach us. Of course the more we know Him and the more confident we become in Him. Then it only stands to reason that we will become more like Him. That is why He is forever encouraging us to come near to Him, so that we can be like Him. He was totally submitted to His Father and because of that He knew what the Father wanted and that His Father would do everything He promised.
When we hear someone’s name, we relate it to a person. If we know the person then when the name is said we can have various responses to the name depending on what sort of a person we know them to be. We base that on our experiences with them or sometimes on second hand knowledge but all the same there is a relationship to the name. When a person hears the name of Jesus there is a response as well. When a person loves Jesus, their ears perk up at the mention of His name. On the other hand if a person has an aversion to Christianity, they respond differently.
The question I have been asking myself is how do I come to the place where I have that kind of faith in Jesus’ name. The only conclusion I can come to is to just do it. Once I recognize the need, then I must seek God to meet that need. That need is to be more like Jesus. That, I believe, is the heart cry of a Christian.
He is truly all we need. The more we understand this the better life will be. His Name is the key to life. When I call the bank and give them my name, I have access to everything that is mine in the bank as well as what I would sign my name for. When I call on God in Jesus Name the same is true of His kingdom. I am praying that God will open my understanding of this to such a degree that there is no doubt left in any part of my being. I pray that I would have the same confidence when I call on Him as I do when I call the bank. This is my prayer for all of us, because when we are walking in that kind of faith, then we can bring much glory to God and to our savior Jesus as He performs miracles.
