THE OTHER SIDE OF THE HEDGE
Be sober; be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1Peter 5:8 NKJV)
Just as surely as God’s hedge keeps us entwined and holds us together with Him, there is an enemy of our souls who is looking for opportunities to wrap his vines around us and destroy us. We cannot hope to stand and experience the fullness of the kingdom of God if we do not keep ourselves in His love.
Of course His love never fails, but ours can. As this scripture points out, our adversary walks about like a roaring lion. He makes a lot of noise. He advertises his wares loudly and makes great promises. He looks for those who wander or can be enticed away from God’s hedge and is ready to pick them off. Once he has a person wrapped up he does not offer any free passes; he just keeps piling on the pain.
Fortunately, God does not easily let anyone go. Last time I told you about taking that hedge down and how it held on and how that reminded me of God and how prayer entwines us and holds up even those who are weak and even those who appear to be dead.
Well, it was not a lot easier to load up that hedge and haul it away. I was still getting poked, and climbing up to try and pack it down I found lots of resistance. This reminded me that even as we are being drug or wandering away, God is still doing all He can to arouse our awareness and rescue us at our first call.
That is why the adversary roars all the time. He is trying to drown out the still small voice of the Lord. Knowing that God will always rescue us is a great comfort, but we are much better off to resist the devil steadfast in the faith. (vs. 9)
There is no need for us to live in fear of the adversary. God’s Word says that His perfect love casts out all fear. However, we must be careful to stay close to the hedge that God provides for us. Many Christians have found themselves wrapped up and suffocating in that hedge of the adversary. Once they have recovered they realize that there were little things that moved them just a little further out of the Lord’s shadow all the time and then it seemed that all of a sudden their world came crashing in. Unfortunately, the adversary knows his job and does it well. That is the reason for the warning to keep a look out.
There is a hedge of protection and a hedge of destruction; and hedge of life and a hedge of death. We will do well to remember to humble ourselves in the sight of God so that he can protect us and exalt us in due time. Keep standing in His hedge!
