THE PEACE OF GOD
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (Philippians 1:2)
As we have talked about peace, we must realize that this peace is not a peace that we are manufacture. We do not develop this peace and then manufacture and put it on a shelf so that it is available when we need it. This peace is God’s peace and it is a gift that we possess. It is not our peace; it is in fact God’s peace dwelling in us in Christ Jesus.
God’s peace is powerful enough to break the greatest strongholds and calm the greatest storms. God’s peace is complete and active the moment that we receive it. It matures in us as we trust in the Lord and in His promises.
I recently heard a man’s analogy of the difference between a tame horse and a broke horse. He said a broke horse won’t spook. He also said that the way to break a horse was to put miles on them. As I thought about this, I considered our Christian lives. We might get trained and tamed and able to look and do the right things at the right times, but we may also be easily spooked outside the pen. We need to put the miles on with Jesus. Then no matter what may come up, we allow God’s peace to rule in our hearts. We may be started from time to time, but we are easily calmed by the Lord who is able to do abundantly above and beyond what we may hope or think.
You see, what we have in God’s peace is not a version of peace that fits us. It is God’s peace. We may be tempted to think that someone else got a different version, but God is complete and perfect and He is just as complete and perfect in one person as He is in the next.
Our version of peace may expect God to take the stick out of our hands if he really does not want us to hit someone. God’s peace actually empowers us to break the stick in half and make amends. That is real peace!
So we have in us more than enough to calm the storms. In fact, the storms are calmed in advance. For Jesus in the boat, the storm was calm. He did not let it affect Him in the least. He could have slept through it. When they did wake Him, He calmed their storm!
We know in advance that when we call God, He hears us. I was awake in the night for an hour calling God for sleep. In between those calls I was listening for His take on my being awake. God can pour out a lot of information in an hour. The most memorable or the one I remembered best was the reminder that we have God’s peace. The same peace that Jesus manifested is the peace that we have to manifest. We did not make it. We did not earn it. It was given to us.
Like all things with God, we choose who we will serve. We choose whether or not to trust God. We choose who will be first in our lives. He brings peace, because He is the Prince of Peace!
