THE THING I SEEK MOST
The one thing I ask of the Lord-the thing I seek most-is to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord's perfections and meditating in His temple.(Ps27:4 NLT)
There is a need in our lives to understand just how much God loves us. We can hear how He loved us enough to give His son over and over again and still not understand or respond to that love. God can do any number of wonderful things in our lives and still we do not grasp the depth of His love. Then one day our eyes open and we see that it is true; God really does love me! We then go through the time of wondering how we could have missed it and why after we missed it for so long He still loves us, but we hold on to the fact that He does love us.
As we grow in this understanding of His love, we in turn learn to love Him more and trust Him more. This trust increases our faith and our understanding of what God desires to do for us. We begin to comprehend just what it means when God says He has good plans for our lives.
As we rely more and more on God and experience the benefits of His presence in our lives, a tight union is formed. It is in this realm of relationship that we must be aware that there is a danger of forgetting what the whole thing is all about. Just as we can be and often are found guilty of taking the love of others for granted, we can begin to do the same in our relationship with God.
As much as He longs for us to trust Him, call on Him, ask Him, and receive from Him, He longs even more for our love. He wants us to desire Him above everything else. In other words, it can become a serious problem if we allow our desire for the things He does to rise above our desire for Him.
There are so many things that seem good that can subtly replace our deep desire for God. We can become consumed with being successful servants and justify neglecting God because we are busy serving Him. We can find ourselves basing our love for God on His performance, and if He does not perform the way we want, our trust and faith weakens.
David must have been feeling this need when He penned this Psalm. Above all else, He was asking the Lord to keep him in His house. He had wandered on occasion and knew only too well the pain of being away. He knew how necessary it was to always delight in how perfect and wonderful the Lord is. He knew that meditating on the Lord was the thing that would keep Him close.
This is the deep desire of every heart but we all know that it is possible for it to be pushed aside. This is a simple reminder to renew our commitment to love and honor God above everything else. This is the thing we should seek most.
