THE THING TO KNOW

"Yes Lord, I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God..." (John 11:27 NKJV)

Knowing that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God who came into the world is really the beginning of things to know. The truth is that when we come to know this most of us really have no idea what we have. In fact, no matter how much we know we still only know part of it because there is always more to find.

This truth is the entrance into the mine of the Lord’s treasures. In this truth we find life. We find treasures like hope, faith, and love. We find the treasures that release us from the pressures of this world. This mine contains the keys to emotional, financial, and physical wholeness. Yes, Jesus said He came to give us life and make us whole.

Do you ever wonder why whenever we begin to speak of treasures the temptation is to either turn off the thought or immediately spiritualize it in order to incorporate it into our lives? Why are we uncomfortable with the idea of God providing every sort of treasure for His people? It is only to the extent that we remove the limits of what we will believe that we can behold the glory of God.

Martha came to Jesus convinced that He could have healed her brother. She also believed that her brother would in fact rise again at the resurrection. Her problem was with the fact that Lazarus was dead and even though she had total confidence in Jesus she was not prepared to ask Him to raise her brother from the dead. She was sure God would do whatever Jesus asked but she was not prepared to ask herself.

I think Jesus knew she was close to a great treasure and that is why He reminded her of who He was and what He could do and asked her if she believed it. At this point I think Martha just gave the answer she could be comfortable with and left. She wanted to Jesus to say, “Come on Martha let’s go get your brother out of the grave.” Jesus wanted Martha to just believe in Him enough to ask Him to do it.

How often do we desperately want God to do something but even when we ask we doubt that He will do it? We think He could but doubt that He would. So we step back out of the mine and stand at the entrance comforting ourselves with the fact that we believe Jesus is the Son of God. At times we even take it to another level and we are proud that we believe even when God does nothing for us. The thing we forget is that God gets no glory from our pride. The truth is that God never does ‘nothing’ for us! He is always faithful even if we are not and He is doing something.

So the thing to know is that what we know is only the beginning of what there is. Jesus is the opening into the Kingdom of God and He longs to show us the way because he is the way, the truth, and the life.
