THE WANT TO
Yes, it is God who is working in you. He helps you want to do what pleases Him, and He gives you the power to do it. (Philippians 2:13 ERV)
Deep down inside of us there is a desire to do what God wants. We were made in His image, so we were born with that. We were also born with free will so we could choose to follow that desire or choose to follow what is not right. God did not make us with a predisposition to be great sinners. He made us to be like Him. In the verse previous to the one above the Holy Spirit tells us that out of fear and respect for God we need to continue to live in a way that gives meaning to our salvation. When I read this I asked myself the question; “What does your salvation mean to you?” That would take a book, but I hope and pray that I am living in way that gives meaning and shows gratitude for the great gift of salvation. That said, I know there is more and I am asking God to guide me.
If God has given us the “want” to do what pleases Him and the power to do it, why don’t we? Why doesn’t the whole world just line up? Why don’t I line up all the time? It just does not make sense. Why is immorality flourishing? Why are families falling like flies? Why is there a question about abortion, God’s plan for marriage, lying, cheating, and stealing? The simple answer is that God made it all very clear and the devil wants to blind the eyes of people at the points that God makes most clear?
In Genesis chapter 15, God talks about the future of the Amorites and he says they are not guilty enough yet to lose their land. I prayed that we are not guilty enough to lose our nation. At that point I felt impressed that we who love God have the power and the responsibility to draw on the favor of God and keep the nation from total destruction. No doubt there will be plenty of destruction in the midst of things, but still we must rise up in faith and stand; believing that God is able and willing to keep us.
The personal part of all of this is what we are doing with the “want to” that God is giving us. It seems to me that if we really agree with God then we need to take the power and do it. No matter what it may be, we have the power to complete His plan in any given situation.
Last night I discovered that I had lost a key that was very important. (The only key to a motor cycle) My bride immediately said, “Don’t worry. God finds things for you.” Well I went about looking and then calling and texting for others to look when I could not find it. I did find something my wife was looking for, but my key was not to be found. I kept praying and believing and telling God I really needed it back. I had nearly given up when I looked down where I had looked before and there it was right at my feet. Now some would say it was a coincidence. I prefer to believe God placed it there just to give me one more glimpse of His power and faithfulness.
More than anything, I want to know God more. Not because of what He does but because of who He is. I want the whole world to want to know Him, see Him, and experience Him. That I believe, gives the most meaning to His salvation.
Pray that people would give in to that great want. Then this could truly become “One Nation under God.” Sin would be put under our feet rather than exalted and righteousness would be the favorite thing of all. Isn’t this what you want?
