THE WATCHING WORLD

Your goodness is so great! You have stored up great blessings for those who honor you. You have done so much for those who come to you for protection, blessing them before the watching world. (Psalm 31:19 NIV)

Do you ever wonder when David wrote the Psalms? Did he make the declarations before, during or after his experiences? I would tend to think they are a combination of all three. I think that sometimes he was rejoicing after victories, at other times he was declaring what He believed God would do, and at yet other times he was in the middle of things and reminding Himself of the goodness of God. I think we would all do well to follow his example. After all, we all agree that the Word of God is good for us!

Are you convinced in your heart that God’s goodness is great? Do you rejoice at the thought of the great blessings He has stored up for you? Do you faithfully declare the truth of His goodness in your life? This Psalm reminds us that God is blessing us before a watching world. Oh yes, the world is watching. The world is looking for something. They are reading children’s books about witchcraft, watching television shows about mediums, and running after every form of spiritual self-help.

So what is the importance of a watching world? Think about this. God always did things for His people according to His promises. He told Abraham what to do and Abraham told people what God had said. Then people watched as God blessed Abraham. The same is true of every person and circumstance in the Bible. He told Moses to go and tell the Egyptians to let His people go and the world watched while God performed His wonders. He told Joshua He was going take the wall down at Jericho and the world watched as He did it. God always watches over His word to perform it.

So if we have confidence in what His Word says, we honor God by declaring His goodness and faithfulness. The world watches people who live by faith. However, the important thing is not that the world watches, it is that God watches.

It does not bother the world when people go to church. Really, have you ever noticed that the world applauds it when a church advocates for things the Bible forbids? They don’t investigate those folks. But let someone declare that God heals, provides, protects, and expects His people to trust Him and obey Him, and some investigative reporter will get busy looking for faults.

This scripture is only one of thousands in the Bible that promise the faithfulness of God to those who honor and declare His goodness. The world needs to see the blessings of God in action. It is our responsibility to let our lights shine in this world so that God can confirm His word. Don’t be afraid to boldly declare His goodness and plans for you. Give Him an opportunity to show off in your life! Let the world know the King is not just an occasional visitor in your life but rather a permanent resident.
