THEN
Then the Lord told Abraham, "Leave your country"...so Abraham departed...(Genesis 12:1,4)
Do you ever wonder about the Lord’s timing? As I read the story of Abram (Abraham) again I noticed that God waited till his father died before telling Abram to go. Could it be that Abram’s father had been instructed by God to go to Canaan but just never finished the course?
Have you ever started to obey God but stopped before you completed the assignment? There is no doubt that we all have found ourselves in that place where we were sure we heard God, but took just long enough to think about it to miss the opportunity. Don’t be discouraged by this, simply determine in your heart that you are not going to miss an opportunity again. You can never go wrong doing something good or kind when you are doing it as unto the Lord even if it was not God’s idea in the first place.
Well, whether Abram was finishing what his father started or not, we will not know till we get to heaven. What we do know is that after his father died that the Lord gave these instructions to Abram. It is also possible that the Lord had spoken to Abram earlier concerning this was coming but God was waiting for just the right time. After all, there are times when the Lord tells us something, and then tells us He well let us know when the time is right!
The important thing here is that when God told Abram it was time to act, Abram did it. God told him what He was going to do for him and Abram walked right into God’s promises. We should take note that Abram was doing quite well right where he was. His father had done well and with his father dead, Abram was set to do even better. Still, when God told him to leave his father’s house and go, Abram believed that God could do what God said and off he went.
Let’s face it there are some things that God asks us to do that are easier than others. We are all happy to follow when it seems it will take us from way down to way up, but when it seems a little risky and that it could actually cost us something, we may be slower to respond. It is when we give that the blessing of God is released upon us.
Even though Abram took a bunch of his stuff with him, the only guarantee he had that it would last was God’s promise. God has promised us all the same things that He promised Abram. How will we respond?
One more little thing for us to consider is the fact that Lot went with him. God never promised Lot anything, and yet his association with Abram brought him the blessing as well. God spoke. Abram went. Lot went with him. There really is no risk when we obey God. He always makes it work.
