THERE IS A PROMISE
Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it.(Hebrews 4:1 NKJ)
Isn’t it good to know that no matter what may happen, the promise is still there. And the promise was made by none other than God Himself! I wonder if we bother to consider the full impact of that statement. How often do we give up on things, when God has made us a promise. We know the scripture. We know that God can not lie. We know that He has said He will bring to pass every word that He has spoken. And still, we let go. Well, here is good news. The promise still remains. You can rise up and go after it all over again, only this time, don’t quit. I think that true rest comes only in the presence of God. We know what the Word of God says about His presence. The joy, the peace, the protection, the provision and the list of good things goes on. Well, in every circumstance of life, we have that promised rest. That place that God has promised us. Our piece of the promised land. There may be some strain involved in getting there, but it is there all the same.
We all know, that it is not always bad things that keep us from that rest. A person can experience great personal success, and still feel no rest. A Christian may experience what should be a victory, and not feel at ease or at rest. This could be because it was not done the way God would have it done. We expect to be uneasy in trials, but it is strange when we have no peace in victory. No matter what the case, we still have the promise of rest. We have that guarantee from God, but we have to be determined to settle for nothing less than His rest.
As we read on in this chapter, we see that rest was not found, because what God said was not mixed with faith. I know that this becomes an arguable theme when we start talking about faith or the lack thereof. A person may say they have faith, but not be receiving the promise. If this happens, we must be like the man who’s son was possessed and Jesus told him, “all things are possible to them that believe.” The man said, “I believe, Lord help my unbelief.” In other words, he was saying, I think I believe, but you must know something I don’t, so help me in the area where I do not believe. Many Christians get hurt here by pride. We just hate to admit we might be doubting when we should be shouting. We need to get over this and find someone to help us break through. We know that pride goes before a fall. Wouldn’t it be better to swallow hard and jump over, rather than go under?
Listen, the point is, THERE IS A PROMISE! Don’t insult God by acting like He breaks His promises. If you are headed the wrong way, get turned in the right direction. You may be headed back to the desert instead of into the promised land. Quit circling the mountain and get into the rest that God has promised. If we would expend half the effort to get to the rest God has promised that we do circling mountain, we would soon find ourselves living in the promises of God.
