THERE MUST BE MORE
And now may you have the power to understand as all God's people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love really is. (Ephesians 3:18 NLT)
Since the day that the Lord first got my attention, the thought that has driven me is that there must be more to Jesus. Obviously I had missed this realization as a youth and therefore my thinking was that He was okay but nothing special. There were of course times when I was in trouble and I would find myself making promises to God concerning what I would do if He would get me out of trouble, but I never kept them.
Once I walked into a Bible study and it became clear to me that I was in trouble, everything changed drastically. First, I searched for a way out of the trouble. Once I discovered that Jesus was the only Way, I wanted to know just where He could take me. And so, for the last 17 years or so, that has been my quest. As long as I have sought for more of Jesus, He has been faithful to lead me. Anytime that I have relaxed in that quest the journey has stalled. There have been times when I have come to a place that I liked so much that I thought perhaps it was a stopping place, only to find that there is no stopping place. There is always more that the Lord can show us and give us.
One of the first times I read the Bible through, I underlined a prayer that a man named Jabez prayed. Recently I heard a message and read a book on that prayer. Now it seems that everywhere I go, the prayer of Jabez is coming up. This man who wrote the book has been praying and teaching on this prayer for many years, but it is like this is the time the Lord has chosen for the whole world to tune into it. When I first read the book, I realized that God had been working that prayer out in my life long before I had any understanding of it. My first attention to it and underlining it in my Bible had opened the door for Him to answer that prayer. Now with greater understanding, I am excited each day to see what more He will do.
There it is again, “more”! God is a more God. Truly, “The blessing of the Lord, it makes us rich, and He adds not sorrow to it.” In Ezekiel 6:9, God said that the day will come when they would realize how they crushed Him by seeking other Gods. God wants us to depend on Him for everything. It hurts Him when we look elsewhere for our provision, comfort, or protection. God wants us to seek Him because it is from Him that all blessings flow. And believe me, He wants to bless us. He is a jealous God. He is jealous for our love and attention. There is no limit to what He will do in response to our love, praise, and worship.
God wants the whole world to know that He is the God who can and will supply all our needs according to His riches in glory. No one has yet found all the fullness of God on this side of eternity. That is why He wants us to pray and ask Him to bless us. He wants us to ask Him for more. He wants to reveal His power to us and then through us to the world. If we believe this, then we will seek God and we will find Him. If we do not believe this, then He is not really very special to us, because we do not expect much from Him. If He is not very special and we do not expect much, then He will be far down on our list of things to do each day. We may throw Him a token hello like we do to someone we pass on the street, but we will have little reason to stop and visit. Settle it in your heart that you will seek for more of Him and that when you do, you will find more than you ever hoped or imagined.
