THEY APPOSED THEMSELVES
And when they apposed themselves and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, "Your blood be upon your own heads; (Acts 18:6 KJV)
Do you ever find yourself being your own worst enemy? I think we have all found ourselves wondering why we are doing what we are doing. Sometimes it takes a while to realize that we are hurting ourselves more that we are hurting anyone else. As I read this verse in the King James Version of the Bible, the fact that they apposed themselves jumped out at me. The New King James says that they apposed him (Paul) but I like the picture of them actually apposing themselves. Paul had just told them very clearly that Jesus was Christ. Anyone who rejects that fact is their own worst enemy. For there is only one name under heaven by which men must be saved!
That said, let’s move on to some other ways that we may in fact appose ourselves even as we walk with God. Any time that we do not allow the word of God to dwell in us richly we are apposing ourselves. For instance, when we know that the Lord says to forgive and we refuse to forgive, whom do we hurt? We hurt ourselves and we rob God of the joy of blessing us with what he has in store for those who love Him. If we rob ourselves, we certainly are apposing ourselves.
The bible tells us to resist the devil and instead we resist the truth. Then while we are resisting the truth, we are declaring that the devil is the one causing us trouble. A good share of the time, the enemy does not have to do anything because we are busy apposing ourselves.
Jesus once told the Pharisees “they knew not the truth.” That was their basic problem! Even when they heard the truth they refused to believe it. As long as we doubt any part of the Bible, we will be in opposition to the truth and ultimately apposing ourselves. For instance, when the bible says that Jesus healed them all, it means he healed them all! If we try to figure out who did not get healed, we appose ourselves. The bible tells us who did not get healed. Those who would not believe did not receive.
When we refuse to believe that nothing is impossible with God we appose ourselves. Why would we want to appose ourselves? We end up saying we want to go forward while we are backing up. It is like trying to run while we are tied to a tree. There is nothing the devil loves more than to see us appose ourselves right into giving up!
Rather than giving up, we can present ourselves to God totally committed to His Word. Lord, please help us to see when we are one’s apposing ourselves. Help us to line up with the truth. After all, it is the truth that makes us free.
