THINK IT THROUGH

"Think this through and you will see that I am right." (John 7:24 NLT)

I cannot say just how many times in my life I have done or said something without bothering to think first, but suffice is to say it is more than a few! I have yet to meet the person who has not had the same experience. The simple truth is that quite often we just do not take the time to think.

It is one thing to act without thinking and quite another thing to just refuse to think. The people that Jesus was talking to here were so locked into their way of thinking that they refused to see the truth. They were so stubborn that even the crowds suspected that there refusal to believe was based purely on selfish motives.

Can you imagine with all that these leaders had heard and seen with their own eyes why they would continue to plot Jesus death? I know from personal experience that it is easy to look at them and say, “How could they be so stupid?” However, are we really much different? They were trying to stop Jesus, the living Word. When we refuse to believe God’s Word; when we cut it off before it can perform His will in our lives, aren’t we just as guilty.

Which is worse, killing Jesus or having his death be in vein? Hang on. Don’t quit reading just yet! Think about it. At least those who killed Him were honest. They were wrong but they were honest. We, on the other hand, when we refuse to accept all the truth of His word are hypocrites! We have no right to pick and choose what we will believe and how we will believe it without taking the time to think it through.

We should think it through for ourselves not just because someone says something! We are expected to be able to “rightly divide the truth.” Too many people have decided that since we can divide it we should be able to subtract it too! However, I believe that a better way to understand dividing the truth would be to say we should think it through. We should have the guidance of the Holy Spirit and an open mind to hear what the Spirit of the Lord is saying.

Far too often I have seen people decide that God is not going to do something because they have never seen it or because it did not happen instantly. Consequently they stop the Lord from performing His word. We need to think it through; give it time to work.

While we are thinking, we should concentrate on convincing ourselves that God is true and that everything else is a lie. Instead of considering reasons why we should doubt, we should be considering why it must be true. Jesus said that if we would think it through, we would see that He is right. We may as well start all of our thinking based on the premise that He is right! It will save us all a lot of time and heart ache.
