TOGETHER
Behold how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!(Ps. 133:1)
I think that down deep in our hearts we all know how important it is to stick together. One thing we can be very sure of is that the devil knows how important it is to split things up. He likes to split families, friendships, churches, and most of all, he likes to split us away from our fellowship with God.
Last night, I built a campfire. As it was burning, I went and found a large log and put it in. It was one that was not split. If you are a camp fire person, you know that sometimes those logs that are not split can be hard to get going and once they are going, it is hard to keep them burning. As I watched that log I began to consider how much more difficult it was to burn it when it was not split. At that point, I believe the Lord began to teach me some things about unity.
That log would burn twice as fast if it were split in half and four times as fast if it were split again. If it were splintered like kindling it would be gone in a puff. But when it was all together, it was hard for it to even begin to burn. I had to keep putting small stuff around it just to keep it going. The same is true in our lives. Whether it be a family, a church body, or our relationship with God. If we will not be split, we will not be easily destroyed. That is why the enemy is so busy trying to divide people all the time. The attack on the family is a relentless one. It is so destructive. If you are a person who has suffered the split up of a family, learn from it and fight harder to keep together all that is left, and to see that nothing in the future can be split.
The way the enemy works is to first try and get a wedge in somewhere. I have tried to split logs that were so hard you could hardly start the wedge, and when you did, it just stuck and would not split. This is the way we need to be. We need to recognize when the enemy is trying to drive the wedge and fight against it. He may use lots of means, but the devil the source of the problem.
If the enemy can get the wedge in, then he goes to work getting the first split. Again, let me remind you that this can be a business, a family, parents and children, church bodies, or relationship with God. No matter what it is, the devils tactics are the same. He will use anything he can to try and get us to lose our faith in God. If we recognize the tactics, then we can fight to limit the damage. If my wife and I allow a wedge and don’t do something about it, damage is done. It does not have to end in a permanent split if we fight to repair the damage. You see God can heal anything if we call on Him, and get ourselves to the repair shop. The same is true if a wedge is inserted between parents and children, bosses and employees, and any other place that unity can be broken.
I could not begin to cover everything in a page, but I think you can imagine on your own all the places that this can apply. If you will ask God, He will show you how this applies to you and how you can fight against this. He will also show you areas where the wedge is in and how to remove it. It is important to fight for unity in every area of our lives. Read the rest of Psalm 133 and you can see why it is worth it. The Psalm closes saying, “For there the Lord commanded the blessing–Life forevermore.” Don’t let anything divide you from the things that are so important to you. The devils ultimate goal is to split you in so many ways that you lose your faith in God, so that you doubt everything and everyone and see no hope for anything. Submit to God and resist the tricks of the devil.
