TREASURE
The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure that a man discovered hidden in a field. In his excitement, he hid it again and sold everything he owned to get enough money to buy the field. (Matthew 13:44)
Treasure! Looking for treasure. The Kingdom of Heaven is like a treasure! Where your treasure is, that is where your heart will focus. We have treasure in earthen vessels. You are a treasure! God treasures you.
Let’s face it, we sometimes treasure trash and trash our treasures. We can change that when we see what real treasure is! We simply need to control how we look at things. We may not see the treasure clearly with the first look, so we should look again.
What are we looking for? Jesus said a man discovered a treasure in the field and it excited him. It was probably not his first time in that field. He had probably walked right by it on many occasions. Oh, the joy of discovering the true treasure in life. A treasure that makes everything else just everything else and opens our eyes to Jesus.
Jesus has a way of working in our lives and helping us to see treasure in the most amazing way if we will only look.
In the parable, the man bought the field anticipating finding more treasure. It made perfect sense. It also makes perfect sense for us to expect to find more as we draw nearer to Jesus. In Christ, we find that even the smallest things are treasures. We really can become childlike and find value in what seems like nothing.
Kids come home with rocks, snakes, frogs, and well you know what I am talking about. In the same way, if we control how we look at things we can see the treasure in even trashy situations. We can pray. We can help. We can guide.
Think about it. Instead of looking for things to complain about, we see things as God sees them. We recognize trashy attitudes and that is a treasure in itself when we shift our perception. Wow what a joy it is when our language changes or our heart changes toward God and away from our previously treasureless lives.
Each little treasure encourages us to dig deeper into the Kingdom of God as we discover that there is so much more. We can find the treasure of helping someone that we would have crossed the street to avoid! We find the treasure in recognizing the strangest thought. Quite possibly we can see the treasure as God speaks to us as read a devotion or listen to the news!
I sometimes find myself discovering how God might feel about something when I was not feeling that at all. I have to admit that there are times when I put certain treasures on the shelf until I can see them for what they are. Funny how God can take what we think we know and show us a little different approach. I do treasure those nudges and eye-opening moments. There is treasure out there!
