TREASURE REST

Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.(Psalm 91:1)

How much do you treasure rest? Have you ever felt like you would give just about anything for some rest? Whether it is in the midst of hard work, a stressful situation, or a sleepless night, when rest is out of our grasp we realize what a treasure it is.

Psalm 91 begins with God telling us that when we dwell in His shelter we will find rest. He promises that rest exists. I think that we make a mistake when we think that He is just going to through it at us because we need it. No doubt He often does do that, but I think there comes a time when we need to realize that we are going to have go and find the rest.

Since we know that God cannot lie, we can be sure that the rest is there for us. The Bible tells us that those who seek peace and pursue it are blessed. I believe the same is true of finding rest.

Rest does in fact provide a treasure chest of blessings so we could title this in many ways. We could say, “Treasure your Rest.” Or we could say, “Rest in Your Treasure.” Or we could call it, “A Chest of Rest.” No matter how we want to look at it, resting in God is a treasure worth seeking. In fact if we will understand this rest, it will open the door to so much more of what God has promised.

The real truth is that there is no rest outside of God. There may be different places that we lie down, but they never really amount to what God offers in His rest. In Hebrews chapter 4, we are warned to be careful lest we should fail to enter this promised rest of God. The promise is that when we believe, the rest is ours for the taking.

If we look at Psalm 91:1 we could say that those who live in God’s shelter will realize that there is no rest except in God. Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High will not look anywhere else for rest or satisfaction. Those who dwell in the shelter of the Most High will always go to God first. They will always go to Him because they know He will answer. This attitude will assure them of the prize.

No matter what the circumstance you will be able to tell who is living in His shelter, because they will be confidently turning to Him for rest and peace. These are the people who know where their help comes from. Their help comes from the Lord.

We know that God promises to never leave us. He will never forsake us or disappoint us. The enemy of course, will do all He can to convince us that this is not true. But those who live in His shelter will not be thrown off course. They will never stop looking to God for that promised rest, and because of this they will not be disappointed. So let’s not just sit waiting for God to dump it on us, let’s go and find our treasured rest.
