TRUSTING GOD
And the Lord shall help them and deliver them; He shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in Him.(Psalm 37:40 NKJ)
It is amazing how often people say, ” I am trying to trust God”! Why in the world is it difficult to trust the creator of the universe. Do we have to try to trust the chair when we sit on it? Isn’t it funny how many things we will trust without even thinking about it, but when it comes to God we say we will try and trust Him. Yes we have all been guilty of this.
This is not a lesson in trusting God, because no one can teach anyone to trust God. That is something that we must do on our own. It is intended to make us think about how silly it is not to trust Him. For instance, when we go on the highway, we should be very attentive to our driving as well as driving defensively. Still, we are in effect, trusting people we do not know in the lanes, around us to control a thousand pounds or more of metal traveling anywhere from15 to 75 Mph, and they are coming very close to us as they do it. Yet we trust them without really thinking much about it.
We go to a restaurant and allow someone that we probably do not know at all to prepare, and serve our meal. We put our money in the bank and trust them with it. We buy our groceries and trust that they are safe to feed our families…and the list goes on and on.
Now, there are some people who develop phobias, and are afraid of everything. Even by the world’s standards, that is strange behavior! Well, if we do not trust God, it is the same as saying that we are afraid that He will not be able to do what He says. It is the same as saying that we are afraid that He will not show up to provide, protect, and direct us. By heaven’s standards, this is strange behavior.
Jesus made a covenant with us that is better than the one Abraham had with God. His promises were signed in His own blood. What we have to ask ourselves is, “would Jesus pay such a price to seal a covenant that He did not intend to keep?”
Just as a child learning to walk has to pull himself up and hold on to things, and gradually launch out with no support, so we must pull ourselves up and launch out trusting God. We can not just sit and say we are trying, we have to put some action into our trusting. When we feel ourselves losing our balance, we should quickly turn to God, our strong tower. We may need to lean on one another at times as well. We may need someone to help our unbelief. But if we will determine that we are gong walk trusting God, we will soon be able to run without fear.
