TURN UP THE LIGHT
"You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden." (Matt. 5:14 NKJV)
This could be called “Shine” or “Take off the Shade” or any of a number of things, but idea is the same. Turn up the light!
Jesus stated clearly in His word that we are the light of the world. We are in fact shining in one way or another. The light we can shine is grace, mercy, power, love, and all that God is. In our hearts, that is what we prefer to shine. We are very aware of when we miss it. So why is it that we miss it so often?
Have you ever watched little kids play ball. You see them laying down playing in the dirt when the ball comes their way, or looking into the stands for their folks when the umpire calls a strike. No matter what game they are playing, that is what they are doing; they are playing and it is not really all that important to them. Later that may change or they may just quit playing those games and go on to others. They may have great gifts that are never used, because they just were not interested.
In the scope of a child’s life, that may not be all that big of a deal, but in the scope of a Christian’s life, it is. I think we miss it because we are not all that interested. We fail to focus on what God has put in us, so we are not focused on what is going on. We really do not see just how important our part in the game is. We are not really convinced that we need to be that involved. We think we can just let those that it is important to do all the shining!
When I was a kid playing ball I played lots of positions on the baseball field. One of those was pitcher. Sometimes the guys in the field lost interest because the ball did not come to them all that often and then when one did, it was not always pretty. Because of this, I chose to play the outfield when I was not pitching. I wanted to be sure the balls got caught or run down and thrown in. The game was important to me, so I realized that the positions that some did not want to play were very important positions and must be played well.
As Christians we must realize that all light is important. It is dark out there. It does not matter if you are called to light up a stadium, an alley way, or a closet somewhere; that light shines bright in the kingdom of God. Everyone is important in the Kingdom of God and everyone needs to take seriously the light of God that is in them everywhere they go.
It is not something we need to strain for, it is something we simply need to desire enough to allow it to happen through our lives. The things we love, we do well. We should love the Light. If we love the Light, we will let the light shine. It may that we need to take the shade off that is keeping His light from coming in and then getting out. Don’t leave the shining to someone else.
You are the light of the world. You are important. You are precious to God and someone is really needing you to shine. I am sure you feel a glow coming on right now. That is God saying, “Come on let’s have some fun.”
