WATCH OUT

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. (1 Peter 5:8-9)

If God really cared, you would not have this problem. God may care about others, but He has forgotten you. You deserve to suffer. God wants you to learn your lesson once and for all. You may as well give up. I guess you are just not one of the chosen ones. You tried it, but it just does not work. You are getting just what you deserve. I would be mad at God if I were you.

This is a short list of one liner’s that the devil keeps on his refrigerator and passes out as memory cards to his demonic minions to use to disrupt and destroy the faith of those who love God. Everyone who has committed themselves to or thought about following the Lord has heard one or more of these and could write their own long list of imaginations that God has told us to cast down because they exalt themselves against what God is really like.

There was a good reason that the Holy Spirit followed Peter’s declaration that God cares for us with a warning to watch out because this is the very truth that the devil wants to steal from us. If he can get us to doubt God’s care then everything else will tumble like dominos.

In the garden the serpent undermined the care of God by convincing Eve that God was really withholding from them. He must not care if He would keep something from us; right? Like a parent does not care because they keep a sharp knife from a three year old, or like a friend does not care who keeps the car keys from a drunken friend!

We must stand firm in our faith, remembering who God is and what He is really like. To hear some people talk, you would think that God loves judgment when in fact if that were the case He never would have sent Jesus to die for us; nor would have Jesus come with the message that He did not come to judge the world but rather to save it. Yes, in the end, whenever that is, God will judge the earth. This is all the more reason to stand firm against the devil.

We have a call to continue in the faith. Our assignment is to love God and to love others and while we are at it to allow the Lord to show us His favor. He made an agreement with us forever. (Psalm 111:9) We would do well to seek out the fullness of that agreement and not allow the enemy to convince us that God does not keep His word. In Psalm 116:7 David reminded himself and us to “Relax, the Lord is caring for you.”

This is the good news and it will stand every test and temptation that the enemy can through at us. Shut the door and keep out the devil! God cares for you. Resist and defeat any thought that does not confirm this truth.
