WHAT ARE YOU THINKING

Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit. (Romans 8:5 NLT)

Has anyone ever asked you, “What were you thinking?” Or have you ever made the statement, “I don’t know what I was thinking.” Some times we just throw up our hands and declare we were not thinking at all!

This scripture is a key to keeping the control where the control belongs. If we find ourselves spending a lot of time thinking and meditating on the wrong things we can and must change that thinking! The more we take the control over our thoughts the better we will be at it.

I know that there are times when Christians become discouraged because of thoughts that pass through their minds. We need to remember that we will never be free from passing thoughts. They are attempts by the enemy to dominate us. You have probably heard someone say that it is one thing to have a bird pass overhead but it is another to allow it to build a nest in your hair. This scripture tells us that God has given us control of what we think. We can change our thinking to what we know from God, or we can meditate on those other thoughts until they dominate us. Those thoughts will turn to action if we do not put them in the right place.

So, what do we prefer to think about? Remember scripture tells us to think on good, just, and right things. We are wise enough to recognize things that do not line up with the truth. In fact, the Holy Spirit catches the things we do not recognize right away and he signals us. In today’s language He acts as a Spam filter, or virus warning! He is the ultimate Spy ware!

So if we find wrong thoughts entering, all we need to do is reject them. We know that we do not have to yield to the sinful nature. If Christ is in us we have the power to overcome. We can reject wrong thinking instantly and replace them with truth. There are some wrong thoughts that are so terrible we do throw them out right away. However, the enemy usually tries to slip in the ones that he knows might appeal to us. We need to be just as quick about rejecting those.

If we do find ourselves camped in a wrong thought, we need to get the control back. We need to reject, repent, and rethink. We get rid of the wrong, we accept responsibility, and we get back on the right track. So don’t be derailed by a wrong thought. If you do find yourself sidetracked, don’t stay there! Get hooked back up to the train! God has promised us overwhelming victory in Christ Jesus.
