WHAT GOD REQUIRES

The Lord has already told you what is good, and this is what He requires: to do what is right, to love mercy, and walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

This sounds almost too simple doesn’t it? Could it be that this is all that God requires? If so, why is it that we complicate it so much? There could be any number of different reasons, but I think the root of it is that we want to decide for God what He means.

For instance, God tells us to do what is right and we would rather decide what is right for everyone else than look at ourselves. He did not tell us to decide for anyone else. From a grammatical perspective, the understood subject is “you.” Yes, you do what is right. How do I know what is right? Well if God tells us to do what is right it stands to reason that He wants is to ask Him. Therefore, in order to be doing what is right we would need to be in continual contact with Him. If we will trust Him to guide us we will learn to trust Him to guide others as well. Remember that there has only been one who always did what was right. The rest of us are still learning, and believe it or not we may not all be taking the same courses at the same time. No matter what, we can trust God.

This moves us on to loving mercy. We should all be very grateful for the mercy that God extends to us on a continual basis. For some reason we seem to lose sight of it at times and we fail to extend it to others. Boy would we be in trouble if God were as hard-hearted as we sometimes are. When He says to love mercy He means that we should love what we have received and pass it along. It is easy to find fault with others, but if we love mercy we will look for the good and pray for those other things. So we seek God for what is right for us, we thank Him that He is merciful in spite of our failure to do what is right, and we extend mercy to others.

Finally He says that we should walk humbly with our God. Yes, we walk with Him! We don’t take His place! We walk along and observe how He walks. The disciples walked along with Jesus and with each new miracle they became more humble. As their understanding of who He was increased they became more and more in awe of Him. By the time He forgave Saul and called him to be Paul the Apostle they were able to see that God had done a great work. They just prayed that it would remain, and of course it did.

So if we will seek God for what is right for our lives and love the mercy we receive enough to pass it on, we will find walking humbly with God to be a very pleasant experience. We will be so glad to know that we are doing what God requires and that it is not nearly so complicated as we have tried to make it.
