WHAT IS BEST

Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it. (James 4:17 NLT)

Recently I sang a song that I had never before heard and now the opening line keeps running through my mind. The song begins with a question. “I wonder if I’ve done my best for Jesus?” Do you ever wonder about that?

I mean, what is the best we can do. One person came to Jesus and asked what he needed to do to be saved and after it appeared that he had met all the requirements, Jesus told him to go and sell everything he had and give to the poor. So are we all supposed to do that? We know that we should care for the poor, so how many of the poor should I care for. Is it up to me to take care of all of them?

We are told to give, but how much is enough? How much is best? What will really be enough for Jesus? To be honest I don’t think anyone but God knows, but I believe that if we will humble ourselves before God and make ourselves available, He will show us what pleases Him in every circumstance.

James 4:10 says that when we bow down before the Lord and admit our dependence on Him, then He will lift us up and give us honor. Well there is something about this question that has me more convinced than ever of my dependence on God.

The Apostle Paul said that he had run the race and fought a good fight and he was ready to go and be with the Lord. He also said that He had not yet gotten everything perfect, but he forgot what was behind and reached for what was ahead.

I am sorry to say that I am sure I have not done my best for Jesus. Though can’t think of anything that He as specifically asked me to do that I have not done, I can think of plenty of things in the word that I come short of in my life. So I guess there are things He has shown me that I have not done.

The scripture that we started this with says that if we know what is right and we do not do it, it is sin. Sin sounds a lot worse that not measuring up or missing the mark. Perhaps it will help me to do my best if I see not doing my best as sin. I believe that the key to doing our best for Jesus begins with having the desire to do so.

I can honestly say that I have not felt the Lord condemning me as I pondered this question; I have just felt a deeper need to know what is that perfect will of God for me. Roman’s tells me that if I will present myself to God as a living sacrifice and allow the Word to transform me by the renewing of my mind I will prove what that perfect will is.

Mostly I am feeling like the Lord is encouraging me to allow Him to show me the way as I step into a new place in my relationship with Him. I have always wanted to please Him, now He will show me how to do my best. What is best for you? Ask Him!
