WHAT IS COOKING

But as the scriptures say, "No one has ever seen, no one has ever heard, no one has ever imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him." But God has shown us these things through the Spirit. (1 Corinthians 2:9-10 ERV)

Knowing what is on the menu has a real affect on our hunger. When we discussed how hunger brings fullness we touched on how taste stimulates hunger. In this scripture Paul quotes Isaiah saying that no one has seen, heard, or imagined what God has prepared for those who love Him. But then Paul adds that God has now shown us these things through the Spirit. I have quoted verse 9 many times as an appetizer or an explanation that there is more. It is often used as a comfort as well and to point us to what God has in eternity, but this was not what Paul was saying. He was saying that Isaiah seemed to have caught a glimpse of what God has now shown us and made available to us through the Spirit.

Jesus said that He had come so they could have life and have it more abundantly. Through His life He gave them an amazing glimpse of the life that is in Christ and then told them it was only going to get better when the Holy Spirit came. Understanding should increase as we seek and as we taste and see that the Lord is good.

As a kid, when I got up in the morning before school and saw bread dough rising on top of the Duo Therm stove, I knew something good was coming at lunch time. I would ride my bike or run as fast as I could through the snow to get to those hot tea rolls with butter melting on them. This was of course a taste and a desire I developed after seeing and tasting the rolls a few times. I also discovered that the dough itself was much to be desired and would sneak a bit whenever I could. Those of you know what I am talking about can well imagine and perhaps even taste it as you read it. I could go into a much longer description of this if time and space would allow. For now, let’s just say that if we are impressed with something our description gets better and better.

Paul was impressed with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and He was not about to tone down His revelation. I was reminded as I considered this how when I first began to speak in tongues I did not want to make a big deal about it. God strictly reprimanded me for that saying, “Never make light of anything thing I give you.” Needless to say I got the point and realized that I had, in an attempt to not offend anyone, in fact offended God. That will not happen again.

Everything from God is good. He has prepared and is preparing wonderful things for us and He has in fact told us that we can find out what is cooking from the Spirit who leads us into all truth. We must desire everything God has promised. We must seek, taste, experience, and share the goodness of God because He just keeps getting gooder! Just like something that you develop a taste for by continuing to try it until you love it so it is with God. Some things may not feel or taste just right to begin with but with a view of His promises, if we stick with it, we will see the goodness of God in the land of the living.
