WHAT IS THE CAUSE

What is the cause of quarrels and fights among you? Isn't it the army of evil desires at war within you? (James 4:1 NLT)

If you ask people in midst of disputes what the cause of the dispute is, more often than not you will hear an excuse. The excuse is that someone or something else has caused it. “It is his fault. It is her fault. It is their fault. If only this or that.” No doubt, just the reading of the question to the Christians scattered among the nations brought a wild response. Imagine what the people thought after they had settled down to listen to the rest of the story and were faced with the fact that it was an army of evil desires at war inside of them. I doubt that they wanted to hear that, any more that we do!

Isn’t the same true with us? This war goes on long before we become Christians, but in order to become Christians we need to acknowledge that we are the sinners and that it is no one else’s fault. It is pretty hard once we know the Lord to accept the fact that we still have an army of evil desires at war in us. But the only way we can win that war is to take responsibility for our own thoughts, words, and actions.

We need to be willing to face the truth of what God says and then apply His wisdom so that we can overcome that army of evil. Our desire to make excuses and then justify them does not help anything. Rather than pointing the finger, why don’t we try looking in the mirror and seeing if there is anything we may have done to cause the problem. Then even if we can honestly say we did nothing, why not try to see what we can do to help rather than hurt the situation. Remember, “Those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of goodness.”(James 3:18)

Yes, the best way to overcome that army of evil is by the Word and Wisdom of God. For we know that the wisdom that comes from God is pure. It is perfect in every way. We must get over the idea that it works sometimes and sometimes it doesn’t, or that it works for some people but it won’t work in my situation. That is just another excuse, and God really does not want to hear our excuses. He wants us to trust Him. Think about it, how much do you like it when people try to make excuses to you. Nothing fuels a fire more that two people making excuses back and forth or worse yet making excuses by going here and there and casting the blame on someone else. If we want to see God’s word work, then we need to apply it to everything, everywhere, all the time.

God’s wisdom is also peace loving, and gentle. Hey, we all prefer peace in our lives and we all want others to be gentle with us. His wisdom is willing to yield to others. Usually, we want someone to yield all right, but it is not going to be us! Why not? Is it really that important to be right or to have our own way? Especially if we know it is going clog up the flow of God in our lives. What is going to be the most beneficial in our lives? Is having our way more important than a harvest of goodness. I don’t think so. Let’s defeat that army within us, and allow God to help others to defeat theirs.
