WHAT IS TRUTH?
For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness tot the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.(John 18:37 NKJ)
Pilate’s response to this word from Jesus was to ask Him, “what is truth?” It seems that the world is wondering this same thing these days. For years, the truth has been overshadowed by the idea that there is no absolute truth, or that truth is how you perceive it, or choose to believe it. When there is no truth, then right and wrong become our own choice as well, and to say the least, things get pretty messed up. Unfortunately the church has followed the same route in some respects, and God is in a process of correcting that.
Jesus told Pilate that He came to bear witness to, or reveal the truth. And anyone who was of the truth would hear Him. Pilate stood there with the truth staring him in the face, and after asking, “what is truth,” said, “I find no fault in Him at all.” Pilate was absolutely right. He not only heard Jesus, he recognized Him for a moment. He felt the truth! And because he felt it, he made a declaration of it. The truth of Jesus Christ is so wonderful, that when you hear it, you can actually feel it. You may not always recognize what you feel, but as you continue to seek it, more and more you will know what the truth feels like. The truth will not necessarily always feel good! Sometimes it will pierce your heart. But with the pain, will come the balm of healing salve from the Lord.
It is most important that we seek the truth and put no boundaries on it. The world needs to see the kind of truth Jesus was talking about, not just the truth the way we choose to perceive it. The world does not need to see religion in action, they need to see Christ in action. Jesus was standing before Pilate as a result of religion in action. They wanted Him dead, and they wanted someone else to do the dirty work. They were not of the truth, and they did not want to hear the truth. They were chosen, but would not choose Him…THE TRUTH!!
We have to be careful that we do not get into this same frame of mind. We can at times desire something so much that we can not recognize the truth even when it is standing right in front of us. We can know what is the right way, and still convince ourselves that another way will work out too.
For a brief moment, Pilate knew the truth and declared the truth. But then the people hit his weak spot. They mentioned Caesar. And even though Pilate felt bad and lost all of his peace over it, he chose Caesar over Christ. He chose Caesar over the truth. I think it is safe to say, that we all have Caesar’s in our lives. We all have those weak spots that can be appealed to, and the devil knows everyone of them. That is why it is so important that we hold fast to the truth, even when it does not appeal to our flesh! That we fight the good fight of faith, so that we can lay hold of the prize of that high call of God in Christ Jesus.
There is truth, and we should not settle for anything less than the truth. We should not rob ourselves of God’s plans for us by resisting or denying the truth. Jesus told us that the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth, because He would bear witness of Christ. We have no excuse for not knowing the truth. Pilate received the truth when he asked, and God will do the same for anyone else who will seek the truth. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life.
