WHAT TO DO
"What shall we do, that we may work the works of God? (John 6:28 NKJ)
What do I have to do? This is a question that must always be satisfied. From the time we are born we are trying to figure out how to get what we want. A baby learns that crying seems to get people’s attention. Then they learn that a smile can accomplish things too. Later we learn that crying and yelling is no longer such a wonderful way to get what we want. As time passes we learn to work, or at least we should. In some people’s lives cheating and stealing becomes their work! Still, the actions we take are prompted by what we feel we have to do in order to get what we want.
The answer that Jesus gave them to their question was a simple one. He said God wants you to believe in the one He sent. They responded by saying that He needed to do more to prove who He was and Jesus in turn explained to them in no uncertain terms that there was already more than enough proof for them to get started believing.
I don’t know why it is so hard for us Christians to just go ahead and believe God. Oh we say we do, but many times we are the same as these folks. We are still expecting Him to prove Himself. On one hand we think we must have to do something and on the other hand we don’t want to do anything. We want to do what we think is enough because it is easier than trusting Him. And then when we have done what we want without seeing what He wants, we expect Him to perform. If He doesn’t, our faith and trust waivers, and we try to blame Him for that. All He really wants is for us to believe that He is who He says, and that He can do what He says.
Today is Mother’s Day. All over the world there are people expressing appreciation for the love that Mother has shown them. I know that there are those who have not experienced all that God planned between a mother and child, but the fact is, everyone has a mother. No one is born without a mother. Even though we have scientists who are trying to play God, nobody can do it like God did. Even if a person does not know the mother that gave them birth, they know that someone did carry them, and someone nurtured them and raised them. The point here is that no one is born without a mother. The beginning came from God and it will end with God. A baby considers the one caring for him or her to be their mom. They simply believe it. I don’t remember as a child ever sitting wondering if my mom was my mom or expecting her to prove that she was. She was mom whether she performed the way I wanted her to or not. I loved her then and I love her more now. The sooner we learn to appreciate our mothers the better.
In the same way, God wants us to believe He is and believe in the one He sent. We should love Him now and we should love Him more as we know Him more and appreciate Him more. There is nothing He needs to do to prove He is who He says He is. Just as sure as someone gave us birth, God is who He says and Jesus is who He sent. Just believe!
