WHAT WAS SPOKEN
...he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken...(Romans 4:18 NkJ)
How we value God is revealed in how we value what was spoken. What has God said? What is God saying? If we do not place value on His word or value time alone with Him to see what He has to say, then in truth we really do not place much value on Him.
If it easy for us to put Him off or put other things before Him, then we have a poor concept of who He is and little expectation of Him being and doing who and what He says. If we never apply ourselves to seek Him and know His ways, we never will place an appropriate value on God and consequently we will never experience the benefits that He has prepared for those who possess this understanding.
Remember, Jesus said that we were blessed because we had the opportunity to understand. It is then up to us to get, receive, and retain the truth that God offers. May the same be said of us as was said of Abraham; he believed God.
God began with Abram by telling him to leave where he was and go where God was leading him. There is one thing in this that is very clear and one that is very vague. It was clear that he was pulling up stakes, but it was not clear at all where he was going. God made it sound good with the promise to bless him and make him a blessing. How would you like to go to your family and say we are moving and God is going to bless us?
In a multitude of homes people would be mocked and committed for saying such things. Even in many Christian homes, this would be highly scrutinized and ultimately voted down. But Abram was willing to go with what was spoken to him.
Later, after God had in fact blessed Abram, he was a little down hearted that he did not have an heir to leave all the blessings to. So God told Him not to worry that he would have a son and in fact that He would be the father of many nations. God went to so far and to seal that promise with a name change for both Abram and his wife. Even though they were too old in the natural way of thinking to accomplish this Abram grabbed hold of the idea of being Abraham with all his might. Faith rose up in him and he told Sarah what God said. She must have thought only half of what God said would work so she lined Abraham up with her servant girl. Well it worked but not the way God intended.
Ultimately, Abraham held on in hope against all logic to what God had spoken and God finished what His words had started. We need to be like Abraham and deny doubt any place in our thinking. We need to place the highest value on what God speaks and settle for no less than giving Him our best and expecting His best. Ask yourself these questions. Am I following hard after God? Do I value God and His word more than anything else in life? Do I understand that true life is found only in Him? Am I willing to change whatever I must in order to walk in all the blessings of God?
