WHAT WILL GOD ALLOW

You can enter God's Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it. (Matthew 7:13 & 14 NLT)

I often wonder why we spend so much time trying to figure out what God will allow? He already told us what He wants! He wants us to love Him and to love our neighbor as ourselves. He wants us to overcome evil with good and be a blessing not a curse.

Before I was saved, there were only a couple of circumstances in which I really even considered God much. One was whenever I was in trouble and the other was whenever I was hoping He loved people too much to send anyone to hell!

The Holy Spirit tells us that there is a broad way, but it does not go where we want to go. He also tells us that there is a narrow way that leads to life. So then who can be saved? The answer is simple, anyone who wants to!

It seems that a lot of times Christians spend more time wondering what God will allow than we do desiring to please God. Of course God will forgive anything we do, but why should we plan on needing forgiveness. Will God forgive me if I get a divorce? Will God forgive me if I have an affair? Will God forgive me if I get drunk once in while? Will God forgive me if I dress wrong? Will God forgive me if I cheat a little or lie a little or do little things that I know are really wrong? Yes of course God will forgive us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. However, if we live this way we are no different than those in the world. The world wants to know what they can get away with. I wonder how many people have been picked up for speeding because they assumed they could go a certain number of miles over the speed limit before they would be stopped.

Personally, I just don’t think we should be trying to figure out what we can get away with. We need forgiveness often enough without planning on it! When we are of that mindset, we really are not living the life that God has promised. It is a narrow way that leads to life. I am not talking about heaven here. God makes the eternal calls. I am simply suggesting that if we want to experience the abundant life that Jesus promised, then we should not be looking for ways to stretch His will. What best thing do we miss when we take the low road? It may not always be the case, but more often than not, when we wonder if it is okay, it probably isn’t. We also need to be cautious that we do not stretch it so far that it breaks. Sometimes people stretch until they believe the lie. I remember hearing once of a pastor who ran off with his secretary believing that God told him he should.

We should not be wondering what we can get away with, rather we should be asking God to keep us away from anything that keeps us from life.
