WHAT YOU WERE MADE FOR
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for Him, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs.” (Matthew 5:2)
Are we desperate for God? Yes, we were designed to need God. We may not realize just how much we need Him, but we do. Like a diesel engine cannot run on anything but diesel, or a rocket needs rocket fuel to lift off and leave the atmosphere, we need Jesus to orbit the heavens.
We simply do not run like we were intended without God. Our lives are never satisfied without Him. This is why Jesus said that our real blessings come when we realize our need for Him. You satisfy me Lord!
God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases Him. Paul tells us this in Philippians 2:13. Remember how we said all glory to God who is able. We were reminded of his mighty power working in us.
It takes power to do what pleases God. Even though we were designed to run on His presence and power, it takes power to choose life. It takes power to make the right choices. Have you ever filled your vehicle with fuel and selected the wrong fuel? Sometimes you can get by with it. Other times it can cause real damage.
The same is true in our walk with God. We were designed to please Him. We want to please Him. But we do not always choose to do what pleases Him. Sometimes our automatic responses are just that. Our own responses. Even when the power to do what pleases Him is leading us, we get in the way.
When we do this, our engine ceases to run smoothly. Even before we know our need for God, we get these feelings like something just isn’t right. Without God, we tend to just shake them off and go on. But we can only go so far.
I remember when E85 gasoline came out. Wow, the price looked good. The rumor was you could mix it with regular and be ok. I am pretty sure that someone took that too far in one of our vehicles and used it because it was cheaper. That car never ran right again.
We can try and get by going our own way, but we will never run right. When we come to know our need for God, we can try to ignore Him, but we will chug along and bog down and end up sitting alongside the road powerless to go on until we yield to the desire to please Him.
The great news is that God never stops working in us. He never stops supplying the fuel that we need. Life can wear us down, but we can overcome it by turning to the only perfect power supply.
Remember what you were made for. Respond to your deep desire to please God. Fill up on some time with Him. Fill the desperate need for His breath of life. Oh, that is good.
