WHERE THE SPIRIT IS
Now, the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, He gives freedom. (2 Cor. 3:17)
In the 7th chapter of Isaiah God tells the people that if they want Him to protect them that they will have to learn to trust what He says. Have you ever noticed that it is difficult at times to trust what the Lord says? Perhaps you always trust what the Lord says. I would like to say that I do, but the truth is, sometimes my actions say that I do not trust what He says. I may believe that He says it. I may wish that I would do just what He says. I hate to say that I don’t trust the Lord, but if I am going to be honest and if I am going to overcome the wrong tendencies, then I am going to have to admit that when I do not act or think according to His Word; then I am not trusting Him.
As we have looked at God speaking to us by His Spirit we have had to decide whether we believed that God speaks or not. The fact is that He speaks, but if we choose to believe otherwise we will miss out on the benefits of hearing and trusting Him. In this passage of Scripture from 2nd Corinthians Paul was talking about the veil that kept the Jewish people from the truth. He said when people turned to Jesus the veil came off. Jesus said that we are blessed because we had been given understanding. It is truly a blessing to have our eyes opened to the good news of Jesus Christ. However, it is sad that many people come to know the truth but then allow a veil to come over them when there is deeper understanding and more of our salvation to be obtained.
The Lord is the Spirit and the Spirit is the Lord. And where the Spirit of the Lord is, He gives freedom. We have the opportunity and the privilege to brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. But we cannot do that if we are in bondage to our own wants and desires and refuse to trust what the Lord says. There were times that the Lord told Israel and Judah to do things that made no sense. Once He told them to give themselves over to their enemies and He would bless them in captivity. He warned that if they did not do this they would be destroyed. Some trusted Him and were blessed others did not and were destroyed.
It does not make sense when the Spirit tells us to pray for those we believe are using us or to bless those that are cursing us, but God says we have to learn to trust what He says. If we do not, we cannot expect the blessings that He has planned for us to flow. We move ourselves outside of His protection and open the doors to destruction by the enemy.
If you have ever heard the Spirit urge you to do something that in your flesh you did not like, but you went with what the Lord said; then you have experienced the blessing and the peace that comes from trusting. If on the other hand you have refused to trust what he said, then you have known what it is like to be without peace and you have seen things go down hill like crazy. So I guess the choice is ours. Choose the Spirit. Choose freedom.
