WHO I AM
"If you only who knew the gift God has for you and who I am, you would ask me, and I would give you living water." (John 4:10 NLT)
One thing is for certain; the last person that this Samaritan woman expected to meet at the well that day was Jesus. But then, isn’t that kind of the way it goes for all of us. We are going along in life and suddenly there He is. I never expected to meet Jesus the day I walked into a bible study. Many people go to church for years and then suddenly they meet Jesus and everything changes. Look at Saul who we know better as the Apostle Paul. He was out to get rid of Christians when suddenly Jesus appeared and used him to change the world. The same can be said for all of the apostles, prophets and teachers. Yes, knowing Jesus, changes things.
We know that religion tells us all about God. We learn that He created the heavens and the earth. We learn that He sent His son to provide forgiveness for our sins and our salvation. We learn all about how God worked in the lives of people. We learn about the miracles that Jesus performed and about the ones his early followers took part in. But somehow, religion just does not get us to the place that we realize God has gifts for us. There just is not any life in the knowledge of what happened long ago. That is why Jesus told the woman that if she knew who He was, she would ask Him and He would give her living water. Notice He did not put any conditions on her receiving. All she had to do was ask.
She was the one who tried to complicate the simple truth. Why did she do that? Well because she did not know who He was. The greatest people she could compare him with were Jacob and her other ancestors. Jesus simply told her that what he had to offer would satisfy every thirst forever. To her, that meant she would not have to haul water. Which in a sense was right, because when we know Jesus, He becomes our burden barer.
Why is it that we have such a hard time simply believing what Jesus says? God referred to Himself as “The I Am.” Jesus did the same. He is the answer to every prayer. He is the supplier of every need. There is nothing that is impossible for Him. That is why knowing Him gives such life. Each new experience in our relationship with Jesus reveals to us yet another level of that river of life that He promises.
I wonder how often we miss a gift that God has for us because we just don’t bother to ask. Have you ever heard the phrase, “it never hurts to ask?” People use it lot in normal things of life like business deals and etc. I wonder would happen if we had that same mentality when it comes to asking Jesus for living water. Living water represents what ever we need for life in any situation and under any set of circumstances.
When Jesus told the woman that He was the Messiah, she believed Him and it changed her life as well as the lives of the people around her. I know that I need to know Him better than I do now. How about you? Let’s give Him an opportunity to prove Himself.
