WHY

Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.(Philippians 3:12 NKJ)

I honestly have not been a person who spends a lot of time asking God why things happen, or why they are the way they are. Since the Lord first opened my eyes to the truth of the gospel, my greatest quest has been to know Him more and find out why I was laid hold of by God. The New Living Translation says, “I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be.”

Everything else in life is of little significance in comparison with this. Why did Christ save me and what does He want me to be? Well, for one thing, He saved me(us)because of His great love. He saved us so that we could have fellowship with our Father in heaven. This was our Father’s plan in the first place. It was the only way that we could be one with Him. It was the only way that we could enjoy Him and that He could enjoy us. God’s plans was to restore us to fellowship with Himself the same fellowship He had in the garden.

Yes God always wanted to walk and talk with man. He always intended to take care of everything for His children. But then in the garden that all got messed up. So now, God has fixed the gap between Himself and us. So why has He saved us? Why has He laid hold of us. Quite simply, it is so that He can be with us, and that we can be with Him.

He wants us so much, and He just wants us to want Him. He has lot’s of things for us, but they are byproducts of being with Him. He does not want us to reject His things, but he also does not want us to bypass Him because of our desire for the things. When I come back from a trip, my wife and children know that I bring things for them. They know that I am as anxious for them to see the things as they are. Still, I want my hugs and kisses and to know that they want me more than the things. God is the same way. He wants us and He wants us to want Him.

He wants us to desire Him above everything else, and to love Him with pure love. Each one of us has a unique gift of love to give to God. You cannot love Him like I can, nor can I love Him like you can. God does not want us to learn how someone else loves Him and try to do it the same way. He wants us to love Him in the special way that He has made us to love Him. We may use some of the same actions, words, and etc. But our hearts each send a different wave of love.

There may be many sub-topics that come under the main purpose for which Christ saved us, but I do believe that it was so that we could know Him and love Him and fellowship with Him. It was not for the great things we could accomplish, though we will all be used in different ways to do just that. It was so that we could have fellowship together with Him, and that our fellowship would overflow into a world desperately in need of God. They don’t need to know about God, they need to know God, and so do we…more and more and more.

If we are not consumed with knowing God more, then we are probably gradually losing what relationship we have. If you find yourself saying, “yes I want to know you more God,” follow that. If on the other hand, you have no response to this at all. No longing, no conviction, no hunger…God longs for you…don’t neglect such a great salvation.
