WHY
"Teacher," his disciples asked Him, " why was this man born blind? Was it a result of his own sins or those of his parents?"(John 9:2 NLT)
There are lot people asking why these days. But then there have been people asking why forever. People of great faith and people of little faith, even people of no faith ask why when things are not the way they would like them to be. Even the disciples traveling with Jesus wanted to know why the man was born blind. They had a lot of other “why’s” I am sure, but this is one that stands out.
They were trying to figure out who was to blame for this man being born blind. Isn’t that what we try to figure out. They considered this man’s blindness to be a mistake, but they knew God did not make mistakes. Since God does not make mistakes, then this must be a punishment for something. When our son Michael was born with Downs, there were people who thought we were getting what we deserved. After all God had saved us and changed our lives, now He was punishing us for our past. Yah right! What people did not know was what a blessing that little child was to our lives, and how close God was in the midst of that. What some considered a curse was a great blessing to us, and he continues to be a blessing.
We really need to get over trying to find someone to blame for things. Jesus told the disciples that it was not the sins of the parents or the child. Obviously, the child could not have committed sins before he was born. It is just as obvious that the parents had sinned in their lifetimes, because all have sinned. Jesus changed the direction of their thinking. He told them to quit looking for somewhere to place the blame and look at it as an opportunity to see the power of God revealed.
There is a great deal of comfort that comes to a person when they quit trying to figure out what went wrong or right and they just look to see what God is going to do in the midst of them. There are some who never enjoy the blessings of salvation because they do not believe they should be forgiven. Other people go along loving God and enjoying Him and then all of sudden something happens that they do not understand and they get stuck in great big “WHY” rut.
I really think that Jesus is showing us here that there are some things that we just will not figure out on this side of eternity. So rather than spinning our wheels trying to come up with an answer that will satisfy our natural understanding, He says just watch and have faith and you will see the glory of God. God is the same forever and His power is always present. God is all we ever need, and He knows our greatest needs. While we may be focused on what we believe is our greatest need, He knows what is most important for us.
When our son Josiah died, God gave us such peace. We prayed and prayed, but he went to heaven. Every now and then I wonder if I just did not have the faith then to pray right. I don’t pretend to understand all the “why” of that situation, but I do know that he would have been our 4th son. It is doubtful that we would have had any more children. Now we have two daughters. Was there a greater need for us to have these daughters? I have no idea, but I am glad we have them. I am also glad to know that Josiah is being raise by my heavenly Father and that I will see him again.
I do not know why things are not always the way we want them, but I do know that God is faithful. If we will trust Him and keep our eyes on Him, He will give us peace because we know that every moment of every day is an opportunity to see the power of God.
