WHY ASK ANYTHING

But if you stay joined to me and my words remain in you, you may ask any request you like, and it will be granted. My true disciples produce much fruit. This brings great glory to my father. (John 15:7&8 NLT)

This question came to me with a two-sided view. First, there are those who think that what we say to God or ask Him for really has no influence on a plan that He has already made. Some think that He has already decided who will be saved and if you are the list you will be, if not you won’t be. The truth on that subject is that He decided to save everyone who would believe. So then we do have a little something to do with that. Actually we all at times act like we think God does not care what we want.

Who among us has not tried to figure out what God means when He says ask anything? Who has not done their best to water that down or complicate it to a point where we lose interest in asking because we don’t think we could do it right anyway? I know I have, and to be honest with that kind of faith we probably need not ask anything. As for me and my house, we are trying to get this changed. I want to join that group that does not hesitate to ask God about or for anything. I want it to be as natural for me to ask Him as it is for my children to ask me. Hmm, there is that becoming as a child idea again!

So why ask anything? First, because Jesus said that we should. He repeated Himself on this many times. First He said if you ask anything. Then He said just ask anything and it will done for you. Then He said anything that you ask would be granted. Asking and receiving produces fruit and this brings Glory to God. Let’s also remember that Jesus said He would do what the Father wanted Him to do and that way the world would know that He loved the Father. So if God says to ask then by doing what He asks, (commands) we show the world that we love Him. Don’t try to complicate this, just read chapters 13 to 15 in John and see if it does not say this. This is all about Him and how He feels about things, not just about us. So if He wants us to ask we should.

Second we ask because He has things He wants to give and things He wants to do for us and if we don’t ask He does not get to do it. We rob Him of joy if we do not do what He tells us to do. Why should we rob God? Of course if you think God just does what He wants no matter what, you don’t want to hear this. But remember what He said in Malachi about robbing Him? Was He concerned about what they did not give Him or concerned about the windows of heaven he wanted to open for them? The two work together and since He says it is more blessed to give that to receive, you decide which He was most concerned about.

Finally, as was mentioned above. Somehow our asking produces fruit that brings Glory to God. Remember, we were created to bring glory to Him. We are instruments created in God’s righteousness for good things. I believe that is Him in us producing good things and Him for us giving good things. If we being evil know how to give good gifts to our children…remember that verse? So you decide. Why ask anything?
