These words were written long ago and yet they are as current as our next breath. The Holy Spirit was reminding the people even then of how necessary it is to live right. But then as now, there were those who did not think that anyone should dictate how they should live. In the Old Testament there are many references made to times when everyone went their own way and did anything they felt like doing. Needless to say, the results of such living were catastrophic.

This is why it is so necessary that we remain stirred up and seeking the Lord. We do not know what tomorrow holds. Peter makes mention that there are those who mock and say that the Lord has not come yet so why worry about it now, but the truth is that the Lord not only comes everyday He is forever present. Every day people stand before Him and find either that they lived in love with Him and He with them, or that He never knew them.

For all of us, our salvation is nearer than we ever imagined. I will never forget when I realized that God was true and that His word was true. All I could do was ask what do I need to do. I did not even know the terminology to ask for salvation, I just knew I needed to do something. Like the people who heard Peter preach at Pentecost, I wondered what I needed to do in order to be free from the future that I knew was mine.

Today I know longer need to know what I must do to be saved, but I do need to be continually built up in my faith, lest I should stray from the Lord. The Bible tells me clearly how I should live. In my own strength I will fail continually, but if I keep my eyes on the Lord and allow Him to rule my life, I need not fear.

Inside of each of us God has placed understanding of what if right and wrong. The only problem is that he allows us to choose whether or not to obey. We can have our own way, but our way may very well lead us to destruction. Or we can go the Lords way, which leads us to abundant life.

It is sad enough that the world lives in darkness, but Christians must flee the darkness. The world is depending on us to shed the light of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Some think it is not possible to live the way the Lord wants, but we must show that it is not only possible, but that it is the only and most beneficial way to live.

If we won’t do it, why should anyone else? Not only do we need to be examples to those outside of the body of Christ, we are also to be examples to other believers. We have so many reasons for right living, but the most important reason of all is because of our love for God and for our savior Jesus Christ. That itself should be more than enough. May the Lord help us all to live rightly.
