WHY ME

Abraham believed God, so God declared him to be righteous. (Romans 4:3 NLT)

Usually when people are saying, “Why me?” we assume they have just run into something they do not like. No doubt when you saw the header you had a similar thought. On the other hand, there are probably some who had the same feelings I did when this thought came over me in the night. “Why me Lord?” “Why in the world did you even bother with me?” “Why are you so good to me?”

The angels have often wondered why God bothers with man. I am sure that just about everyone who has ever fallen in love with the Lord has had this same question come up. I have often asked this, but this time it seems like it came from deeper within. I awoke in the night and as is my custom when I can’t go back to sleep, I do my best to pray myself back into blissful rest. I began to thank Him for all of His goodness and then “Why me” flooded my entire being.

The answer I got came in a sensation that said, “Because you let me.” Then I remembered that Abraham believed God and God declared Him righteous. All that was necessary for God to do all He promised was for me to believe Him and let Him be God.

There is of course a huge difference between believing that God exists and believing God. Remember, demons believe He exists and they tremble! As for me, I knew of God’s existence for my entire life. I was baptized as an infant. I have a collection of Sunday school attendance pins. I was confirmed as a young boy and even attended church on my own occasionally after leaving home!

So you see, I acknowledged God’s existence. In fact I often prayed when I was in trouble! I really did not expect answers, but it seemed like the thing to do. Obviously God had more faith in my coming to Him than I did in the usefulness of prayers or a relationship with Him. Those desperate prayers were perhaps my life-line.

Praise the Lord! There came that time when my eyes were opened and I made the transition from believing He existed, to actually believing Him. Abraham knew there were gods out there, and that there must a head God somewhere. Because Abraham sought God, God came to him and made a covenant with him. God’s part was to do all that He promised. Abraham’s part was to believe God.

If you say, “Why me?” out of overwhelming gratitude for God’s goodness, it is simply because you believe Him and allow Him to reveal Himself to you and to others through you. If you don’t feel that kind of gratitude and instead feel like you have been abandoned, it may that you have abandoned believing God. It may be that you have simply believed in Him, but never really believed His good plans for you. Only you know the answer to that. Today, I encourage you to believe God and expect Him to reveal His righteousness and favor in your life.
